Classic and modern Tetris share the same goal: drop falling four-block pieces, called Tetriminos, and arrange them to complete horizontal lines. The differences lie in the controls and rules around that goal. Modern games, usually those following the Tetris Guidelines, typically add hold, a next-piece preview, a ghost piece, a seven-piece bag randomizer, SRS rotation with wall kicks, and a lock delay. Classic and older releases do not share one rulebook, so the accurate comparison is between specific games, not between two fixed editions.
What stays the same
The official Tetris Company description of the game says it “requires players to strategically rotate, move, and drop a procession of Tetriminos that fall into the rectangular Matrix at increasing speeds.” That objective is the same in every version. The original game was developed by Alexey Pajitnov in Moscow in 1984, according to The History of Tetris on the official Tetris Company site. The seven distinctive four-square pieces described on the Tetris About page are also common to both styles.
Why “classic” and “modern” are loose labels
“Modern” most often refers to games built on the Tetris Guidelines. The Tetris Company’s official timeline says those guidelines were created in 1996 to establish consistency and quality standards. Anything released before that, or outside those guidelines, is usually grouped as “classic,” but that group includes many different implementations. Some releases have hold and a preview; others do not. Describing a game as “classic Tetris” therefore tells you little about its rules until you check that game.
The technical account on TetrisWiki’s Tetris Guideline page is the most detailed secondary reference for guideline behavior. It also documents exceptions, including guideline-associated games without hold. Treat it as a guide to what a modern-style game is expected to do, and confirm the details for any specific title.

The mechanics that change how the game feels
Hold
Hold lets you store the active piece and bring it back later, which gives you a way to recover from an awkward draw. In guideline-style games it is the most common single tool separating modern play from older versions. Whether a particular game has it, and how many times it can be used before the next lock, should be confirmed in that game’s controls.
Next-piece preview
A preview queue shows upcoming pieces, so you can plan several placements ahead. Some older releases showed only one upcoming piece, and some showed none. The number of visible pieces is a version-specific detail.

Ghost piece
The ghost piece is an outline showing where the active piece would land if dropped straight down. It removes the need to judge landing height by eye, which is one reason modern games feel more forgiving for placement.
Seven-piece bag
The bag randomizer shuffles one of each of the seven tetrominoes and deals them all before shuffling a new bag. Long runs without a particular piece are therefore limited. This makes the sequence more structured and more predictable over short spans. It does not mean every classic game used a different, purely random sequence; many versions used other systems, and the details vary by release.

SRS rotation and wall kicks
Super Rotation System (SRS) rotates pieces in a defined way, and wall kicks can shift a piece slightly when it would otherwise collide with a wall, floor, or stack. A move that fails in one version may succeed in another. If you find a tight spot that works in one game and not another, rotation rules are the first thing to compare.
Lock delay and soft drop
Guideline lock delay lets a landed piece slide or be moved for a short time before it locks in place, instead of locking on first contact. Lock behavior is one of the most noticeable differences in feel. A licensed Radica handheld manual hosted by Mattel gives a concrete example: the piece may slide for one second after contact, and soft drop locks immediately on contact. That is one product’s rule set, documented in a manual from 2000, not a universal standard. The manual is available as the Mattel-hosted Radica Tetris instruction sheet.

How to tell which version you are playing
- Open the game’s manual or in-game help and look for the controls list. Check for a hold button, and for the text describing hold and next-piece settings.
- Start a game and watch the screen. Look for a box beside the playfield for stored pieces, a column of upcoming pieces, and a faint outline below the active piece.
- Drop a piece with soft drop onto a flat surface, then try to slide it. If it locks at once, the game uses immediate locking on contact; if it slides briefly, it uses a lock delay.
- Rotate a piece against a wall or the stack. If it moves into place without needing an open cell, the game uses wall kicks.
- Check the game’s own scoring and speed details in the manual before comparing points or difficulty between titles.
Why modern Tetris often feels easier
Most of the difference comes from information and flexibility. Hold and preview let you recover from bad draws and plan ahead, the ghost piece removes guesswork about landing, and lock delay gives more time to correct placement. Together these reduce the number of mistakes that come from misreading the board or from a single unlucky piece. The game’s core challenge, which is building clean horizontal lines as the speed rises, remains the same.
Players who prefer older rules often find the lack of these aids more demanding and more rewarding. Neither version is inherently more correct; they are different designs for the same puzzle.

The phrase “at increasing speeds” in the official description still applies to both. Speed increases are one of the mechanics most dependent on the particular release.
Portable options exist as well. Physical handhelds such as the Radica model in the Mattel manual bring their own control layout, with directional and rotation buttons, a toggle for the next Tetrimino display, and two AAA batteries. Check the device for the specific rules it implements before assuming it matches any modern guideline.
Modern and classic Tetris have a common core, but modern games are defined by a set of standardized mechanics that many classic releases lack. The difference is best understood as a difference in specific rules, not in the game’s identity.
