Nintendo’s own guidance points buyers to specialist online sellers of older and used products, pawn shops, garage sales, flea markets, classified ads and online auction sites. Before choosing a seller, though, decide which Wii model you need, because the three hardware revisions differ in ways that matter for GameCube compatibility and online features. Nintendo also states that products bought on the secondhand market carry no Nintendo hardware or accessory warranty, so the checks below are your protection.
Where to look for a used Wii
Nintendo’s guidance on refurbished, older and used products (Nintendo Support, U.S. and Canada, checked 8 October 2026) names several channels. Each one carries a different level of protection, so the sections below describe what to look for in each.
Specialist online retailers for older and used products
Nintendo says many online retailers specialise in older and used products. These are usually the easiest place to find a Wii with a clear description. Before buying, check the seller’s reputation and confirm that the listing states the testing performed, the condition grade, exactly what is included, the return terms and any warranty the seller offers. A seller’s own warranty is separate from Nintendo’s, which does not cover secondhand products.
Online auction sites
Nintendo lists auction sites as a source for hard-to-find and discontinued products. Auctions are where you are most likely to find a complete bundle at a low price, and also where you are most likely to find a console sold for parts. Read the title and description closely. A listing for a working console, a listing for parts or repair, and a listing for an incomplete bundle can look similar in photos.
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
Pawn shops and local used-goods stores
Pawn shops are on Nintendo’s list of possible sources. Buying in person lets you test the console before paying. Ask the staff to show the unit working, and check the power, video output, disc reading, controller synchronisation and any included components while you are still at the counter.
Garage sales, flea markets and classified ads
These channels can be the cheapest option, but they offer the least protection. Nintendo recommends cleaning any secondhand product before use. In person, you can run a basic test on the spot, but the condition and completeness checks fall entirely on you, because there is usually no return option.

Nintendo Store
The Nintendo Store sells accessories, replacement parts and a selection of authentic refurbished products to residents of the United States and Canada. It also notes that parts and accessories for many older systems are no longer available. Nintendo’s guidance does not confirm that Wii consoles are currently offered there, so do not count on finding a refurbished Wii on the official store.
Choose the model before you choose a seller
Nintendo’s model comparison (Nintendo Support, “Qu’est-ce qui différencie les modèles de console Wii?”, French-language page, checked 8 October 2026) lists three relevant models. The table summarises the differences that affect buying decisions.
Rank #3

| Common serial-number prefixes | LU or LB | KU or KB | HW |
If you want to play GameCube discs or use GameCube controllers, the RVL-001 is the only one of the three that supports them, so it is the model to search for. For Wii-only play, the RVL-101 is a reasonable choice, but check that the games and accessories you plan to use do not depend on the GameCube ports. The Wii mini is the most limited option, so buy it only if you know you do not need online features or SD cards.
Do not rely on the colour or shape of the console to identify its model. Ask the seller for a clear photo of the model label and the serial number, and check the prefix against the table above.
Rank #4

A checklist before you pay
- Confirm the model number and serial prefix. Match it to the games and accessories you want to use. Use the table above and ask for a photo of the label.
- List what is included. Check whether the sale includes the power adapter, video cable, sensor bar, at least one Wii Remote and any Nunchuk you will need. “Console only” usually means the rest of the setup is missing.
- Ask what has been tested. Ask whether the seller has checked power, video output, disc reading and controller synchronisation. Ask for a short video of the console running a disc if the listing does not show this.
- Read the seller’s terms. Look at the return policy, any warranty language and photos of the exact unit. Nintendo’s guidance is clear that secondhand purchases carry no Nintendo hardware or accessory warranty, so the seller’s terms are the only protection you have.
- Compare total cost, not the sticker price. Add the cost of any missing parts to the price of an incomplete console. A complete, tested bundle is sometimes the cheaper option once you do this.
- Clean the console and accessories before use. Nintendo recommends cleaning any secondhand product before using it.

Nintendo states that the Wii Shop Channel closed on 30 January 2019 and that new content can no longer be bought there. The Wii Shop Channel had been available on Wii systems since December 2006. Nintendo’s support page also says that redownloading purchased content and transferring data from Wii to Wii U were still available when the page was written, but that these functions will eventually end. Do not buy a used Wii expecting to add new Wii Shop content, and do not assume the remaining functions will be available indefinitely.

Wii U as an alternative for playing Wii games
If your goal is to play Wii games rather than to own original Wii hardware, Nintendo UK’s backwards compatibility guidance says that the Wii U can run nearly all Wii games in Wii Mode. Wii Remotes and other Wii accessories can be used, depending on the game. The Wii U GamePad does not control Wii software, according to the same guidance.
A Wii U is therefore worth comparing, but check two things before you buy. First, confirm the specific game you want works with the controllers you have. Second, check the current listing terms, since the Wii U is sold secondhand under the same no-warranty conditions as the Wii.
Where the Wii is still a good buy
A used Wii is most useful if you want original hardware for Wii and GameCube-era games and are prepared to check the model and the included accessories yourself. Buy the RVL-001 if you need GameCube compatibility. Buy a complete, tested bundle from a seller with clear return terms if you want to avoid buying parts.
