Steam’s accepted payment methods vary by your account’s store country and currency. The checkout page for your account is the authoritative list: add an item to your cart and review the options shown before paying. A list from another country may not apply to you.
How to see which payment methods Steam accepts for you
- Open the Steam Store while signed in to the account you plan to use.
- Add the item to your cart and proceed to checkout.
- Review the payment methods displayed. Steam says those options reflect your current store country. Choose one you can use, and check any billing-information prompts before completing the purchase. See Steam’s Store Country guidance.
Steam’s store country is intended to match where you currently reside, and Steam says purchases require a local payment method. If you have moved, you can update the country during a purchase using a payment method from your new country. Steam says the setting can be changed once every three months. A Steam Wallet Code does not change your store country.

Does Steam accept PayPal?
PayPal availability depends on currency. Steam Support says PayPal is currently unavailable for currencies other than EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD and USD. Steam attributes the restriction to a processing change PayPal reported to Valve in early July 2025; the timing for restoring PayPal in affected currencies is uncertain. Check checkout for the option available to your account. Steam’s Purchasing Issues page has the current support information.
What if none of the checkout options works?
Steam suggests considering a Steam Wallet Code if you cannot use the payment methods shown. Codes add funds to the Steam Wallet, which are for purchases on Steam; Wallet funds are not cash or a bank balance. Check the code’s region and currency compatibility and its availability before buying. A code is a possible funding fallback, not a way to change store country. - Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
Store country can change the options
There is no reliable single list of methods for every Steam customer. For example, Steam’s Australia page says the Australian Store uses AUD and lists international credit cards and cash transfer as accepted methods. That is an Australia-specific example, not a global menu. Your own checkout is the relevant list. Steam’s Australian Store announcement provides that regional example.
Payment acceptance and refunds are different
A method available for checkout does not necessarily support a refund back to that same method. Steam says that when the original payment method does not support refunds, the refund can only go to Steam Wallet. Its refund-method page describes refund routing for the country represented there; it is not a complete list of payment methods accepted at checkout worldwide.

Why Steam may ask for billing information
Steam may request billing information during checkout even if you are paying with Steam Wallet funds. Steam says location and tax requirements can explain the prompt. See Billing Information Requested During Checkout.

Valve’s End User License Agreement says Wallet funds may be added using a credit card, prepaid card, promotional code or another payment method accepted by Steam. Wallet funds are intended for Steam purchases; they should not be treated as cash or a bank account. Read Valve’s End User License Agreement.
