For a first playthrough, play the four story DLCs in release order: Dead Money → Honest Hearts → Old World Blues → Lonesome Road. It’s a sensible narrative sequence, not a required quest order; the game gives each expansion its own starting signal and quest.
Recommended Fallout: New Vegas DLC order
- Dead Money
- Honest Hearts
- Old World Blues
- Lonesome Road
This is the release-order recommendation given by PC Gamer, and it works well if you want to encounter the expansions in the order they arrived. Bethesda’s Ultimate Edition announcement lists all four as official add-ons.
Can you play the DLC in a different order?
Yes. The order above is advice for narrative presentation, not a mandatory sequence. The official manual lists a separate radio signal and starting quest for each story DLC, so you can choose which expedition to begin rather than unlocking them through one fixed chain.
- Dead Money: “Sierra Madre Grand Opening!”
- Honest Hearts: “Happy Trails Expedition”
- Old World Blues: “Midnight Science-Fiction Feature!”
- Lonesome Road: “The Reunion”
These starts are listed in the official game manual. Treat the order as a choice about how you want to experience the stories, not a rule imposed by the quest system.

Alternative orders based on preference
Start with Honest Hearts
If you’d rather begin with an expedition that feels more standalone, put Honest Hearts first, then play Dead Money → Old World Blues → Lonesome Road. Players discuss this as a preference, not an official or canonical sequence.
Put Old World Blues before Dead Money
Some players place Old World Blues before Dead Money to create what they perceive as a smoother difficulty progression. That’s a subjective approach; the available sources do not establish an official level-by-level schedule or prove that one order is easier for everyone.

Why leave Lonesome Road until last?
In the recommended sequence, Lonesome Road is the final story DLC. Its Steam description introduces Ulysses, identified as the original Courier Six, as a central part of the expansion’s premise. That makes it a natural final stop in this suggested order. This recommendation does not mean you must complete it before or after a particular main-story quest; the sources cited here do not establish such a requirement.
