Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe maximum base Luck in Fallout: New Vegas is 10, the ordinary SPECIAL cap. Equipment can add temporary Luck on top of that base value, so the number on your character screen can sometimes differ from your permanent score. This guide explains how the cap works, the permanent ways to reach it, and the encounters where Luck actually matters.
Base Luck versus equipment bonuses
The game tracks two things separately. Base SPECIAL values are the permanent scores you set during character creation and raise with level-up choices, implants, and quest rewards. Equipment adjustments are temporary modifiers that apply only while the item is worn. The 10 cap applies to the base score.
- Base Luck: permanent, capped at 10.
- Equipment Luck: temporary, removed when the item is unequipped.
Lucky Shades are listed as a +1 Luck item. Wearing them does not change your base Luck, so they do not make the permanent cap higher.
Whether worn gear can push the displayed total above 10 is the one point this guide cannot settle. The exact interaction depends on how the game handles specific equipment, and we have not confirmed it. Treat any claim of a stacked total above 10 as unverified. Naughty Nightwear is also left out here because its Luck bonus has not been confirmed.

Ways to raise base Luck
Luck can be allocated during character creation, so a new character can start with a high score. Permanent increases after that come from four sources, compared below.
| Method | Effect on base Luck | Cost | Where or when it is available | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luck implant | +1, permanent | 4,000 caps | Doctor Usanagi at the New Vegas medical clinic | Number of implants is limited by Endurance |
| Intense Training | Each rank adds 1 point to one chosen SPECIAL stat; a rank can go to Luck | Not stated; uses a perk rank | Available from level 2; 10 ranks | Ranks are finite, so each one spent on Luck is not spent elsewhere |
| Lonesome Road ending perk | +1 to one chosen primary stat, which can be Luck | Not stated | Tied to the Lonesome Road ending choice | Exact perk name and eligibility not confirmed here |
| Lucky Shades | +1 Luck while worn | Not stated | Equipment | Temporary; does not change base Luck |
The Luck implant
The Luck implant is the most direct permanent route. Doctor Usanagi sells it for 4,000 caps at the New Vegas medical clinic. Its in-game description reads: “Your frontal lobe has been enhanced with the Probability Calculator, increasing your Luck by 1.”
Rank #2
- Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
- Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you'll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
- Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
- Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
- Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.
- Bring at least 4,000 caps before visiting the clinic.
- Check how many implants your Endurance allows. The clinic will not install more than that limit, so an implant may be unavailable even if you can pay.
- Expect the +1 to be permanent once installed.
Intense Training
Intense Training is available from level 2 and has 10 ranks. Each rank adds one point to a SPECIAL attribute of your choice, so a single rank can go to Luck. Putting every rank into Luck is possible, but it means giving up those points on other stats.
Lonesome Road ending perk
The Lonesome Road ending gives a perk that raises one chosen primary stat by one point. Luck can be that stat. The ending choice and DLC context determine whether this perk is available, and the exact name and conditions have not been confirmed here, so check your save against the ending you chose before counting on it.

Published descriptions of the SPECIAL system list several effects of Luck:
- Critical hits: Luck affects critical hit chance.
- Skills: One reference describes Luck as raising every skill by 1 for every 2 points of Luck.
- Casino games: Higher Luck improves odds at the casinos.
- Random encounters: Luck influences some of them.
Luck checks in quests
Two specific encounters are listed with Luck requirements:
Rank #4
- Ultimate Edition
- If you've played Fallout 3, you won't miss a step when transitioning over to New Vegas since it's largely the same in terms of gameplay.
- RPG
- Play in first-person or third-person perspective
- REPCONN headquarters scanner: listed at 7 Luck for a scanner code phrase interaction.
- Caesar’s brain-tumor operation in “Et Tumor, Brute?”: listed at 9 Luck.
Because both thresholds sit below 10, a character with the maximum base Luck meets them without relying on equipment.
The question of maximum Luck has a simple answer: base Luck tops out at 10, and the Luck implant, Intense Training, and the Lonesome Road ending perk are the permanent routes to get there. Equipment can add temporary Luck, but it does not change that base cap.
