You can switch routes whenever your current project stops being enjoyable.
Choose a route by the kind of play you want
| Route | What it gives you | Best fit if you want… | Structure and timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story | A narrative thread and direction through the universe | A reason to keep moving from one objective to the next | More directed than open-ended exploration; no event deadline is stated |
| Exploration | New planets and discoveries to scan and document | A low-pressure, curiosity-led session | Open-ended; no particular discovery is guaranteed |
| Building | A shelter, resource-focused base, or personal construction project | Creative work and a place to make your own | Self-directed; Hello Games also describes building with friends |
| Settlement or station management | Ongoing choices about a community or space station | A continuing project with a management focus | Develops through management decisions; specific requirements are not stated here |
| Expedition | Milestones grouped into phases, with completion rewards | A checklist and a shared event to work through | Time-sensitive when an expedition is only open for a limited period; check in-game |
| Multiplayer or another mode | A shared session or a different way to experience the game, including VR | Company, or a change from your usual play | Support can vary by platform and setup |
The game’s official overview presents a broad mix of story, exploration, building, multiplayer and VR. Treat these as options rather than a sequence you must complete.
Follow the story when you want direction
If the open universe feels too unstructured, take up the story and let its objectives guide your next steps. Hello Games’ official overview describes more than 30 hours of story content. That is a description of the available story, not a requirement to finish it before you can enjoy exploration or building.
Explore when discovery is enough of a goal
Pick a destination that looks interesting, visit unfamiliar planets, and scan flora, fauna and minerals. Screenshots or short notes can give your discoveries a personal thread even when you are not chasing a mission. The universe is expansive, but no specific planet or rare find is guaranteed; make the act of looking around the objective.

Build a base if you want a project of your own
Begin with something useful, such as a shelter or a base focused on resources. Expand it only if the building itself is fun: a practical stop can become a more personal design project over time. The official overview describes base-building across planets and building with friends, so this route can be either solitary or shared.
Take on management if you want decisions that continue
Oversee a settlement
The Frontiers update describes becoming a settlement overseer, choosing construction and responding to settler issues. This suits players who want a continuing community project rather than a fresh destination every session.

Direct a space station
No Man’s Sky Update 7.0, Cosmos, adds the prospect of directing a space station, joining a galactic alliance, constructing a space base, and recovering and hauling salvage to deep-space outposts. These give you newer management and salvage-oriented directions to try; the update’s feature set may not be identical across every platform, so check the release log for platform-specific update information.
Choose an expedition for a checklist and community event
Expeditions organize milestones into phases, and the official Expeditions update says milestones can be completed in any order. That structure makes an expedition a good choice when you want clear tasks rather than deciding your own next project. Because specific expeditions can be time-sensitive, check the in-game expedition interface before planning around one.

Hello Games announced Expedition Twenty-Three, “Our Journey Continues,” on September 16, 2026. The anniversary event celebrates the game’s history through milestones based on past updates; its announced rewards include nine framed update artworks, a cockpit bobblehead companion, a Starbound v0.27 Multi-Tool and a golden Rasamama S36. The announcement does not state an end date, so confirm availability in-game rather than assuming it is still open.
Play with friends or change modes
A multiplayer session can turn exploration or building into a shared activity. If you want a broader change of pace, the official overview also lists VR, while the game’s update history includes combat, missions and other activity types. Multiplayer and VR support can depend on your platform and setup; check the current store or support details for the version you play.

- Choose a base, settlement or station project if you want to create or manage something over time.
- Choose an expedition if you want phased milestones and rewards.
- Choose multiplayer if you want a shared session.
For your next session, pick one small target—such as scanning a new world, making a useful shelter, or completing an expedition milestone. You do not need to turn it into a permanent commitment: change direction when the activity no longer feels rewarding.
