Nova Prospekt is a strong candidate if you find sustained combat and its gunship encounters difficult—but players disagree. Sandtraps and Ravenholm can be tougher for players who struggle more with antlions, unfamiliar mechanics or horror enemies.
Why Nova Prospekt is a defensible pick
Nova Prospekt stands out when difficulty means repeated combat pressure. Players have singled out the chapter as especially hard, and another discussion points to the gunships near its entrance as a punishing encounter. Whether it feels hardest will depend on what challenges you: combat intensity and available resources, unfamiliar mechanics or navigation, enemy types, and the atmosphere of a section. No controlled comparison establishes which chapter is hardest across those factors.
Other chapters that may feel harder
Sandtraps
Sandtraps is a plausible alternative if antlion encounters or the chapter’s distinctive play pattern cause more trouble than direct firefights. Players have mentioned it as frustrating, but there is no comparative difficulty data.

Ravenholm
Ravenholm may be the hardest chapter for players who find its horror atmosphere and zombie and headcrab encounters especially stressful. That reaction is subjective; player accounts do not establish a broader ranking.
Highway 17
The buggy-and-train set piece on Highway 17 has had version-sensitive difficulty. A PC Gamer report says Valve “Restored speed of the train near the end of Highway 17 to better match the original shipped difficulty.” This indicates a change relative to an earlier patched state; it does not establish the experience on every platform or current build. How to decide which chapter was hardest for you
- Combat pressure: Nova Prospekt is a reasonable pick, especially if its gunship encounters are a sticking point.
- Antlions and chapter-specific play: Sandtraps may be the tougher stretch.
- Horror enemies and atmosphere: Ravenholm may be the most challenging experience.
- A particular set piece: Highway 17’s train encounter can vary with game version.
