The Series S is digital-only, so it cannot play physical game discs. If you need disc playback, choose a different Xbox model.
Check that the Series S fits how you play
Microsoft describes the Xbox Series S as designed for 1440p gaming with the ability to upscale to 4K. It has no disc drive: games must be played digitally, so a collection of physical Xbox discs will not work on it. Microsoft’s product page lists the console’s features and configurations.
Confirm the storage version
Microsoft lists Series S configurations with 512GB or 1TB SSD storage. Ask the seller to confirm the specific unit’s storage tier; color or appearance alone is not a reliable way to identify it. Storage capacity can affect how much of your digital library you keep installed, so compare the actual version with your needs.
Do not assume an expansion card is included
Microsoft lists Storage Expansion Cards for Xbox Series X|S as an additional purchase, not part of the standard console package. If you want one, include its cost in your budget and ask the seller explicitly whether it is part of the deal. Microsoft’s product page describes the console package and the separately sold expansion option.

Ask what comes with the console
Microsoft’s stated package includes a console, controller, HDMI cable, and power cord. A second-hand bundle may contain fewer or different items, so get a specific list from the seller rather than relying on the listing photo. Microsoft’s product page identifies the standard package contents.
Missing items can change the real cost. Before agreeing on a price, note whether you will need to buy a controller, HDMI cable, or power cord, and add those costs to the console’s price.

Compare listings by condition and total cost
There is no dependable universal used-price range to apply across regions and listings. Instead, compare the details that determine what you are actually buying:
- Storage: 512GB or 1TB, confirmed for the specific console.
- Condition: visible damage, and which functions the seller permits you to test.
- Included items: controller, HDMI cable, power cord, and any expansion card.
- Buyer protection: the seller’s return terms or the protections offered by the marketplace or payment method.
- All-in cost: purchase price plus missing essentials and any optional accessories you want.
Compare like with like: a cheaper console without a controller or cables may cost more to make usable than a higher-priced complete bundle. Treat condition and seller protections as separate from cosmetic appearance.

Inspect and test it before paying
If you can meet in person, ask in advance whether the seller will let you connect the console and test it. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S Service Guide lists tools for testing that include an HDMI cable, display, Xbox controller, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a game, an audio output device, and a USB connection. A brief test can reveal obvious problems, but it cannot rule out every intermittent fault.
Use a practical check
- Inspect the case and ports. Look for visible damage, loose or bent connections, and signs that the console may have been handled roughly. This is a buyer’s visual check, not a Microsoft diagnostic test.
- Connect it to a display. Use HDMI to check that the console produces a picture and that the display connection stays stable.
- Test the controller. Confirm it connects and responds to button and stick inputs. Try the controller included in the sale, not just one supplied for the demonstration.
- Launch a game. If the seller permits it, open a digital game and check that it starts and plays. The Series S does not accept game discs.
- Check network access. If practical, connect using Wi-Fi or Ethernet and confirm the console can get online.
- Check audio and USB. Test audio output and a USB connection if you have the appropriate device available.
If the seller will not permit basic checks, weigh that uncertainty against the price and whatever return or buyer-protection terms apply. A powered-on screen alone does not demonstrate that every connection or function works.

Arrange reset, account setup, and coverage checks
Have the seller remove their data
Ask the seller to follow Microsoft’s current factory-reset instructions before handing over the console. Then complete setup with your own account. Do not take possession on the assumption that a seller’s account or saved setup will be appropriate for you.
Check warranty coverage with Microsoft
Use Microsoft’s warranty and service page to check the console’s coverage for your region. Do not assume a particular coverage period or that coverage transfers to a buyer; confirm the current terms directly with Microsoft.

Do not rely on appearance to establish enforcement status
A console’s exterior and a seller’s verbal assurance do not establish whether it is subject to Xbox network enforcement. No definitive official pre-purchase check is established here, so do not treat a clean-looking console as proof of online eligibility.
Quick Recap
Questions to send the seller before meeting
- Is this the 512GB or 1TB Series S?
- Exactly which items are included: controller, HDMI cable, power cord, or storage expansion card?
- Has the console been factory reset, or will you reset it before handover?
- Can I connect it to a display and test the controller, a game, network access, audio, and USB before paying?
- What return option or buyer protection applies if a fault appears after the sale?
