Nintendo has not said that Trump administration tariffs specifically caused the increase; its 2026 notice cites broader changes in market conditions.
Current U.S. Switch 2 price
Nintendo of America’s current suggested retail price for the Switch 2 system by itself is $499.99. The change from $449.99 took effect September 1, 2026. The $50 increase is approximately 11.1%, calculated from Nintendo’s two published system prices; it is not a separate statistic issued by Nintendo. Nintendo’s price notice

Did tariffs cause the price increase?
Nintendo has not publicly identified Trump administration tariffs as the specific cause of the September 2026 increase. Its May 7, 2026 notice says the revision is “in response to various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term.” That wording leaves open whether tariffs were among those changes, but does not confirm it. The timing alone does not establish cause. Tariff uncertainty was part of the pricing discussion in 2025, but Nintendo’s published explanation for the later increase is broader than tariffs.

What Nintendo said during the 2025 tariff uncertainty
Nintendo delayed U.S. retail preorders in April 2025 while it assessed potential tariff impacts and evolving market conditions. On April 18, it said the console and Mario Kart World bundle would keep their announced prices, although accessories would receive price adjustments. Those accessory prices—including $84.99 for a Switch 2 Pro Controller, $39.99 for a Carrying Case & Screen Protector, and $59.99 for Samsung’s 256GB microSD Express Card—were announced in April 2025 and should not be treated as current prices. Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement
In an April 2025 interview with WIRED, then-Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said tariffs “weren’t factored into the pricing” of the console and that Nintendo was “actively assessing” their impact. He was discussing the price announced at that time, not explaining the 2026 increase. Bowser’s WIRED interview

Don’t confuse the console price with the launch bundle
The $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle announced in April 2025 included the game. The $499.99 price effective in September 2026 is for the system alone. The matching dollar amounts describe different offers at different times, so they are not a like-for-like price comparison. Check current retailer listings for bundle availability and prices before comparing total cost.
What tariff headlines do—and don’t—tell you
A broad tariff framework for Japanese imports does not, by itself, establish the tariff treatment of a finished Switch 2. Classification, country of origin, applicable exceptions, and the supply chain can affect how a product is treated. Likewise, the January 2026 semiconductor proclamation concerns specified covered semiconductor products and excludes non-data-center consumer applications; it does not establish that a finished Switch 2 console is covered. Neither a component tariff rate nor a general country-level rate can be applied directly to the console’s retail price without evidence of coverage and pass-through.
