Scrabble rules exclude proper nouns, foreign words, abbreviations and acronyms, standalone prefixes or suffixes, words written with hyphens or apostrophes, and offensive terms. But a word’s eligibility depends on the word list chosen for that game: agree on the dictionary or lexicon before play, and use the event’s specified list in organized competition.
Which kinds of words are not allowed?
Hasbro’s consumer rules list these prohibited categories. The examples below explain the categories, but they do not settle every specific play; the agreed word list does that.
- Proper nouns and names: A person’s, place’s, or brand’s name is not playable merely because it is familiar. If the same sequence of letters is also an accepted ordinary word in the chosen list, check that entry rather than judging by how the word is normally capitalized.
- Foreign words: The rules exclude foreign words, but an English-language Scrabble list can include words that originated in another language. A word’s origin alone does not decide whether it is valid.
- Abbreviations and acronyms: These are excluded as abbreviations or acronyms. If the same letter sequence has a separate accepted word entry, the chosen list determines whether that word can be played.
- Standalone prefixes and suffixes: A prefix or suffix cannot be played by itself. Hasbro’s instructions allow a prefix to be added to a base word already on the board, provided the resulting play is valid.
- Hyphenated and apostrophe forms: A word that requires a hyphen or apostrophe is not allowed in that form. A spelling without punctuation must be checked as a separate entry.
- Offensive words: Hasbro’s rules prohibit offensive terms, including demeaning, discriminatory, obscene, or vulgar words. In a 2020 statement, Hasbro said it changed the rules to make clear that slurs were not permissible in any form of the game.
Why the chosen word list matters
There is no single English Scrabble list for every region and kind of play. NASPA identifies the NASPA School Word List for school play, the NASPA Word List for regular North American competitive play, and Collins Scrabble Words for international play. Follow the list and rules specified by an organized event.
Word lists can also differ from ordinary dictionaries. NASPA says official Scrabble lists record valid inflections, such as forms of a word, and describes the consumer Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary (OSPD) as covering words up to eight letters and their inflections. Longer words require a longer list. As a result, a word’s absence from a short consumer dictionary does not prove it is absent from a tournament list, and a general dictionary entry does not guarantee tournament acceptance.

For a casual game, settle in advance which dictionary or word checker will govern challenges. In North America, Hasbro calls the Merriam-Webster Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary the official North American word list. Hasbro’s 2020 statement referred to its sixth edition; that historical reference does not establish which edition is current today. NASPA describes its tournament word list as available only to members.

Under Hasbro’s instructions, a player may challenge a word before the next player starts. The result depends on whether the challenged word is in the dictionary:

- If the word is not listed: The player who made the play takes the letters back, and the turn ends.
- If the word is listed: The play scores, and the challenger loses the next turn.
When one play forms multiple words, challenge all of them at the same time. If any word formed is unacceptable, the entire play is unacceptable.
