The film bridges the story to FINAL FANTASY X-2, the full sequel. If you’re following the story, the order is FINAL FANTASY X, Eternal Calm, then FINAL FANTASY X-2.
What is FINAL FANTASY X?
FINAL FANTASY X is the original full-length role-playing game. Its story follows Tidus, a blitzball player, and summoner Yuna as they journey to save Spira from Sin. Square Enix’s game description presents this as the central story of X.
What is Eternal Calm?
Eternal Calm is a short film/story about Yuna after the events of FINAL FANTASY X, not another full game. Square Enix called it “a short film following Yuna after the events of FINAL FANTASY X” in its March 18, 2014 North American announcement.
Its role is to connect X to the sequel: it follows Yuna after the first game and sets up the story that continues in FINAL FANTASY X-2.

- FINAL FANTASY X/X 2 HD Remaster brings this timeless classic forward to the current generation of fans, old and new alike.
How is Eternal Calm different from FINAL FANTASY X-2?
Eternal Calm is the short bridge between the games; FINAL FANTASY X-2 is the full sequel. Square Enix describes X-2 as taking place two years after the beginning of the Eternal Calm. In X-2, Yuna becomes a Sphere Hunter after a sphere shows her a mysterious, familiar image; she joins Rikku and Paine in pursuing its mystery. Square Enix’s overview describes the sequel’s premise.
What order should you play or watch them in?
- Play FINAL FANTASY X.
- Watch or read Eternal Calm, if it is available with your edition or from a legitimate source.
- Play FINAL FANTASY X-2.
You can go directly from X to X-2, but Eternal Calm supplies the short story bridge between them. It is not a substitute for either full game.
