Adding a non-Steam game gives you a shortcut to an existing game in your Steam library, so you can launch it from Steam. It may also let you use features such as Steam Input controller configurations, the Steam Overlay, or the Steam Deck interface—but support varies by game. It does not make the game a Steam purchase or move its updates and ownership system to Steam.
What happens when you add a non-Steam game?
Steam adds a library shortcut to a program already on your computer. Its support instructions describe the result plainly: “This will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.”
That shortcut is not the same as buying the game on Steam or registering a valid Steam key. Steam does not deliver updates for the non-Steam game through this shortcut, and the shortcut is not proof of ownership for your Steam account. The game’s own launcher, account, and update arrangements remain separate.
Why add a game to Steam?
Keep your games in one library
The straightforward reason is convenience: you can launch a locally installed game from Steam alongside games in your Steam library. You do not have to treat the shortcut as a Steam purchase to use it as a launch point.

Try Steam controller configurations
Steam says non-Steam games launched from the library can use controller configurations in the same manner as Steam games. This can be useful if you want to customize controls, but it is not guaranteed: Steam’s controller guidance cautions that functionality varies substantially by game.
Use the Steam Overlay where supported
The Steam Community Overlay can provide access to features such as chat, friends, invites, screenshots, and a browser in supported games. When enabled and supported, its default shortcut is Shift+Tab. Whether it works depends on the game and how it implements overlay support; adding a shortcut alone does not guarantee that the overlay or all its features will work. Show desktop-installed apps in the Steam Deck interface
Steam’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop FAQ says desktop-installed apps can be added to Steam as non-Steam games and appear in the device UI library’s “non-steam” tab. It also says Deck inputs are available to apps and games while Steam is running in desktop mode. This describes a way to add desktop-installed apps; it does not establish that every external launcher or game will work smoothly in the Deck’s gaming interface.

Steam lists several known compatibility problems for controller use with non-Steam games. A game may not behave as expected if its anti-cheat blocks emulated input, its independent launcher requires administrator privileges, it does not support the Steam Overlay, or it cannot be added to the Steam library. Manual setup may also be needed, and behavior varies by game.

The practical choice is simple: add the shortcut if you want one launch point or want to try a specific Steam feature. If a controller or overlay feature matters to you, check that game’s compatibility and be prepared for game-specific setup rather than assuming the shortcut enables everything.
