Hollow Knight: Silksong’s review window opened on or after its launch date of September 4, 2025. Team Cherry reportedly did not send out early review codes, so critics were expected to publish after the game went on sale. The sources available do not establish a separate, officially announced embargo time, so no exact hour for review publication can be confirmed.
The short answer: launch day, September 4, 2025
Silksong’s embargo, in practical terms, lifted at launch. The release date was set in Team Cherry’s release trailer announcement and is also recorded on the game’s Steam listing, so the date itself is well established. Steam’s store page is the place to confirm the listed release date for the game.
Why reviews were expected at launch rather than before
The reason reviews were expected after release comes from reporting rather than an official policy statement. Contemporary coverage attributed to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier said Team Cherry did not plan to send early review codes. The reported rationale was that it would be unfair for critics to play the game before Kickstarter backers and other players. That account is a report of Team Cherry’s decision, not a direct quotation from the studio, so it should be attributed to the reporting.
Coverage at the time described reviews as expected on or after September 4. That expectation follows from the no-early-codes report. It is not evidence of a timed embargo notice issued by the studio.

What the record does not establish
- An exact embargo time. No official, clock-time embargo announcement was found in the sources cited, so any specific hour would be unsupported.
- A direct studio quote on review codes. The no-early-codes rationale is reported through Jason Schreier’s reporting, not a verbatim Team Cherry statement.
- Review statistics. The sources cited do not include review-count or score figures tied to the embargo.
When citing this topic, write that reviews were expected on or after launch, and attribute the early-code detail to reporting. Because launch took place in September 2025, the review window is now a historical question, and the dates above are the verifiable ones.
