When Should You Evolve Nidorino in Pokémon FireRed?

Nidorino evolves into Nidoking in FireRed only with a Moon Stone, so timing depends on which Nidorino-only moves you want first.

In Pokémon FireRed, Nidorino has no evolution level. It becomes Nidoking only when you use a Moon Stone on it, so the timing is your choice. The real question is whether you want a Nidorino-only move before Nidoking’s higher stats arrive. If Horn Attack matters to your team, wait until Nidorino reaches level 22. If it does not, use the stone as soon as you have one.

How Nidorino evolves in FireRed

  • Nidoran♂ evolves into Nidorino at level 16.
  • Nidorino evolves into Nidoking when you use a Moon Stone. Reaching a particular level does not trigger the change.
  • Because the evolution uses an item, you can keep Nidorino as Nidorino for as long as you like, and the evolution will not happen on its own.

The evolution chain and the Moon Stone method are supported by both the Serebii Pokédex and an older GameFAQs guide, so this part of the answer is the most reliable.

Nidorino’s level-up moves

A FireRed-specific move reference lists the following level-up moves for Nidorino after its starting moves. These are the checkpoints that matter when you decide when to evolve.

Level Nidorino move What it means for your timing
18 Poison Sting Learned well before the main decision point
22 Horn Attack The first real checkpoint if you want this move
26 Helping Hand Wait only if this move fits your team
34 Fury Attack Wait only if this move fits your team
43 Flatter Wait only if this move fits your team
53 Horn Drill The latest Nidorino-only option in this list

The same reference lists Thrash at level 22 and Megahorn at level 43 among Nidoking’s own level-up moves. The sources do not establish that evolving at those levels automatically grants those moves, so do not plan around them as a guaranteed reward for evolving at a set level.

Choosing when to evolve

If you want Horn Attack from Nidorino

Level Nidorino to 22, confirm that it has learned Horn Attack, and only then use the Moon Stone. Evolving before level 22 means Horn Attack will not be learned from Nidorino.

If you want a later Nidorino move

Fury Attack (34), Flatter (43), and Horn Drill (53) are the later options in the same table. Waiting for one of these delays Nidoking’s stats. Choose a later checkpoint only if that specific move belongs in your intended moveset.

If you want Nidoking’s stats sooner

Use the Moon Stone as soon as you have one. Nidoking has higher base stats than Nidorino, so evolving earlier gives you those stats for more of the playthrough. This is the trade-off: you give up the later Nidorino-only moves in exchange for earlier stat growth.

Check moves before you evolve

  • Open Nidorino’s Summary screen and check its moves before using the Moon Stone.
  • One third-party guide says the Move Relearner on Two Island teaches level-up moves only from the current species’ own list, up to the Pokémon’s current level. If that is accurate, a move that only Nidorino can learn may not be recoverable from Nidoking after evolution.
  • If you want to keep a specific Nidorino move, make sure it is learned before you evolve.

Source limits and version scope

This advice applies to Pokémon FireRed, a Generation III game for the Game Boy Advance. It does not describe later games that feature the same Pokémon. The Serebii Pokédex covers Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen, so check the version you are playing.

The exact move levels above come from a FireRed-specific third-party guide. An older GameFAQs guide confirms the evolution chain and Moon Stone method, but its move table differs on some level details. Treat the Moon Stone method as the most established part of this guide, and treat the exact move levels as the most likely to need checking in your own game.

If the level list and the in-game Summary screen disagree, trust the game.
