The original Hyrule Warriors has no assigned place in the main Legend of Zelda timeline. Producer Eiji Aonuma described it as a story in a separate dimension, connected to several games across the series rather than set in one chronology branch.
Is Hyrule Warriors canon, and does it fit in the Zelda timeline?
Aonuma’s answer is that Hyrule Warriors has a relationship to Zelda history, but is not part of the main canon chronology. In a June 11, 2014 interview with Game Informer, he said: “With Hyrule Warriors, there is a link between the two, but it exists as a separate dimension, so it doesn’t exist as part of the main canon.”

He also explained why the game was not assigned to one point: “We really don’t want to put it in the timeline because it has links to the different parts of the timeline.” The practical distinction is that it is a crossover story drawing on multiple parts of Zelda, not a chronological chapter that belongs before or after a particular mainline game.
Why it does not belong to one timeline branch
The main Zelda chronology branches, including branches associated with the hero being defeated and with the child and adult outcomes after Ocarina of Time. Nintendo’s timeline overview presents that branching structure. But those branches do not provide a slot for the original Hyrule Warriors: Aonuma’s explanation was that its links span different parts of the timeline, so choosing one branch would leave out those connections.

This placement applies to the original Hyrule Warriors discussed in Aonuma’s 2014 interview. It should not automatically be extended to every later game using the Hyrule Warriors name; each title would need its own official or developer statement to establish its timeline status.
