R3 is the right analog stick click on the DUALSHOCK 4. Press the right stick straight down until it clicks. Pushing the stick in any direction does not register as R3. What the click does after that depends on the game, not on the PS4 itself.
How to press R3
The right stick is the stick on the lower right of the controller, under your right thumb. Pressing it down is R3. Moving it sideways or forward is a separate analog input. Sony’s US PS4 technical specifications list the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller’s “Right stick / R3 button,” and its PlayStation support controller guide states: “Press on the stick to use it as the R3 button.”
R3 versus L3
The left stick has the same click, labelled L3. Sony lists the left stick/L3 and right stick/R3 as two separate controls, so each stick can be clicked independently. R3 is not a face button and does not have its own dedicated position on the controller.
Why R3 does not unlock one universal feature
R3 sends a controller input. The PS4 does not assign it a system-wide function, and Sony’s controller documentation does not publish a cross-game list of what R3 does. Some games map it to a sprint, a crouch, a camera reset, a menu, or nothing at all. Any “hidden feature” you find online is a game-specific mapping, and it applies only in that title.

How to find what R3 does in a specific game
- Open the game’s options or settings menu and look for a Controls, Controller, or Key Bindings section.
- Find the entry for the right stick press, usually labelled R3, Right Stick Click, or Right Stick Press. Some games list it under a general “Actions” group.
- Read the assigned action. If the entry is blank or set to none, the click does nothing in that game.
- If the game has an in-game controls or help screen, check it too. Many games show the full controller map there.
- If you can remap controls, change the action from there and test it in a safe area of the game.
If the click does not seem to register
- The game has no action bound to R3. Check the control settings as described above.
- You are pressing the stick sideways. Press it straight down until it clicks, not just tilting it.
- The controller is not a DUALSHOCK 4. The R3 label above applies to the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller.
- The stick is worn or the click feels soft. A physical fault can cause missed presses. Sony’s support channels are the right place to check hardware issues.
Optional: assigning R3 to a back button
If pressing the stick is awkward during play, Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 back-button attachment lets you assign controls to the rear buttons, and Sony’s attachment manual lists R3 among the available assignments. The attachment works only with a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. You do not need it to use R3, and it is only worth considering if you already own one or want a rear-button layout for accessibility or comfort.

Sony’s PS4 specifications and controller support guidance establish the location and the input, and that is the full extent of the official cross-game information. They do not cover individual game mappings, which change between titles and between patches. For the action in a particular game, the game’s own control settings are the authoritative source.
