The Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template is found in Bastion Remnants in the Nether. Each armor trim template is tied to one specific structure or activity, so the right place depends on which template you want. Official Java notes say the Netherite Upgrade template can appear randomly in any Bastion Remnant chest, and every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant contains two.
Finding the Netherite Upgrade template
Search Bastion Remnants in the Nether. The Netherite Upgrade template is the only smithing template that unlocks Netherite equipment upgrades, so it is the one most players are looking for. According to the Java 1.19.4 release notes, it can appear randomly in bastion chests. A Treasure Room inside a Bastion Remnant is the reliable choice, because the official notes state that every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant contains two templates. Bastion Remnants are not guaranteed to contain the template in other rooms, so a Treasure Room is the stronger target.
Where each armor trim template is found
Armor trim templates are spread across the world. Most come from a standard structure chest, but three locations work differently: Ocean Monuments, Trail Ruins, and the Trial Chamber vaults added later. The table below lists the location for each template, with the retrieval method noted in the original update notes.
| Template | Where to find it | How to retrieve it |
|---|---|---|
| Netherite Upgrade | Bastion Remnant | Can appear randomly in any bastion chest (Java 1.19.4 notes); every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant contains two. |
| Sentry Armor Trim | Pillager Outpost | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Dune Armor Trim | Desert Pyramid | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Coast Armor Trim | Shipwreck | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Wild Armor Trim | Jungle Temple | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Tide Armor Trim | Ocean Monument | No chests; Elder Guardians sometimes drop the template when killed. |
| Ward Armor Trim | Ancient City | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Silence Armor Trim | Ancient City | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Vex Armor Trim | Woodland Mansion | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Rib Armor Trim | Nether Fortress | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Snout Armor Trim | Bastion Remnant | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Eye Armor Trim | Stronghold | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Spire Armor Trim | End City | Look in the structure’s chests. |
| Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper, and Host Armor Trims | Trail Ruins | Brush Suspicious Gravel; Trail Ruins have no chests. |
| Bolt Armor Trim | Trial Chamber Vaults | Location stated in the Bedrock 1.21 changelog. |
| Flow Armor Trim | Trial Chamber Ominous Vaults | Location stated in the Bedrock 1.21 changelog. |
The original structure list, including the Trail Ruins and Ocean Monument methods, is documented in the official Java 1.20 update notes. The Java 1.20.5 notes confirm that the Bolt and Flow templates were added, in the Java 1.20.5 update. The vault placements for those two templates come from the Bedrock 1.21 changelog, so treat them as Bedrock-documented locations.

Ocean Monument: Tide Armor Trim
Ocean Monuments have no chests that hold the Tide template. Instead, Elder Guardians sometimes drop it when killed. Because the drop is occasional, you may need to defeat several Elder Guardians before one yields the template. Do not search monument chests for it.
Trail Ruins: Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper, and Host
Trail Ruins have no chests. The four templates in this structure are obtained by brushing Suspicious Gravel. Use a brush on each piece of Suspicious Gravel you find in the ruins, and expect to search more than one block to find these templates.

What templates do
A smithing template defines which kind of upgrade a smithing table applies. The template is consumed when you use it. Netherite equipment upgrades require the Netherite Upgrade template. Armor trim templates do not add stats. They change how armor looks, and the official update notes are direct on this point:

“Armor trims are purely visual with no gameplay benefits.” Minecraft Java Edition 1.20 update notes, Mojang.
An armor trim takes its pattern from the template you use and its color from the material you add. Choose the template for the look you want, then the material for the color.

Duplicating a template
Official update notes describe a duplication recipe for smithing templates. In a crafting table, place seven diamonds, one block of the material associated with the template, and the template itself. The result is two copies of the template. The Java 1.19.4 notes document this recipe, and it applies to the template you are duplicating, so the material block must match that template.
