The current D&D Beyond class description says the warlock has “formed a pact with a mysterious entity to gain magical powers” through occult ceremony. The patron, the terms of the bargain, and the exact mechanics depend on the setting and on which rulebook edition you are using.
The core answer: a pact with a patron
The warlock’s defining premise is a relationship with an otherworldly patron. The patron is the source of the power, and the pact is the mechanism that connects the character to it. The current D&D Beyond class description, which cites the Player’s Handbook, puts it this way: “Through occult ceremony, you have formed a pact with a mysterious entity to gain magical powers.”
That sentence sets the framework, but it does not fix the details. Not every warlock bargains in the same way, and not every patron is a devil. The entity can be almost anything the setting and the campaign allow, and the terms of the agreement are a matter for the character and the table to decide.
How a warlock comes to the pact
The current class introduction describes a search that comes before the bargain. A future warlock may be drawn to power in one of three ways:

These are presented as the class’s fictional background, not as a required sequence of steps with mechanical effects. A character can reach the pact by a different route if the Dungeon Master and player agree on one.
What the power looks like
D&D’s warlock text describes the power in several forms. Each one comes from a different part of the class description and should be read against its edition.

Access to spells
The warlock’s pact gives them access to spells. This is the most familiar part of the class, and it is the part most tied to the pact itself.
Eldritch Invocations
Eldritch Invocations are described as fragments of forbidden knowledge. Each one grants an abiding ability, meaning an effect that lasts rather than one that is spent on a single use. Invocations are where a warlock’s patron-given knowledge shows up in day-to-day play.

Lasting changes to the character
The legacy 2014 class text describes changes that stay with the warlock after the pact. Its examples include seeing in darkness and reading any language. These are the clearest sign that the pact alters the character, not just their spell list.
Obligations and the bargain
The pact can imply obligations, but the text is not uniform about them. The legacy 2014 class page says: “Various patrons give their warlocks access to different powers and invocations, and expect significant favors in return.” In other words, a patron may grant different powers and invocations, and may expect something back.

What the favors are, and how demanding the patron is, is left to the setting and to the character. The quoted current class passage does not describe obligations, so if you need the current wording on this point, read the full current class entry in the Player’s Handbook.

| Question | What the D&D warlock text establishes | Source and edition |
|---|---|---|
| Who or what is the power source? | An otherworldly patron, described as a mysterious entity | Current (2024) class description; legacy (2014) class page |
| How is the power obtained? | Through a pact formed by occult ceremony, often after seeking forbidden lore, invocations, or marked places | Current class description and introduction |
| What is owed in return? | Patrons may expect significant favors; the terms are set by the character and campaign | Legacy (2014) class page; not stated in the quoted current passage |
| What form does the ability take? | Access to spells, Eldritch Invocations that grant abiding abilities, and lasting changes such as seeing in darkness or reading any language | Legacy (2014) class text for lasting changes; invocations and spells in the class description |
| Which edition and setting apply? | The patron, pact terms, and mechanics depend on the setting and edition | Both current and legacy pages |
Which edition to check
Name the edition before you cite a mechanic. The current 2024 rules page and the legacy 2014 rules page use different wording and frame the class differently. Do not combine text from the two as if it were a single rulebook. If you are answering a question about current play, use the 2024 text. If you are answering about older material, use the 2014 text and say so.
For the complete current rules, D&D Beyond points readers to the Player’s Handbook for further class details.
What this answer does not cover
This article explains the warlock in Dungeons & Dragons only. The word “warlock” appears in many other games, books, and shows, and their patrons, pacts, and power rules are not the same. The sources behind this answer do not establish how those other warlocks work. If your question is about a warlock from another game, check that game’s own class documentation or official guide for its power source.
