Amethyst geodes generate underground in the Overworld, between Y -58 and Y +30. Minecraft’s official article, published in 2025, estimates that about one chunk in 24 contains one. There is no surface landmark that marks them, so you find geodes by exploring caves and mining through stone inside that vertical band.
Where geodes generate
Geodes are Overworld features, so the Nether and End never produce them. Within the Overworld, the vertical band that Minecraft reports is Y -58 through Y +30. Minecraft’s official article gives this range and an approximate frequency of one geode for every 24 chunks. That figure is an average across the world, not a guarantee: a player who visits 24 chunks has not been promised a geode in that set, and a single chunk may contain none.
Because geodes sit below ground, the most reliable approach is to work at the right depth. Caves that reach down into the band, and the walls of ravines and canyons, are the places where a geode’s shell is most likely to be visible.
How to spot a geode
A geode has a recognizable layered structure. From the outside in, look for these layers:

- Smooth black basalt forms the outer shell. It looks different from the rough stone and granite around it.
- A white calcite layer sits directly beneath the basalt.
- Purple amethyst blocks and clusters fill the interior.
A geode is often only partly exposed. Seeing the black shell in a cave wall does not mean the interior is open. Dig carefully through the layers, because mining too fast can drop you into an unlit pocket or expose you to the cave hazards around it.

The official article does not compare search methods, so the table below is limited to what each approach changes in practice.

In practice, combine both. Walk cave systems that reach into the band first, then mine short tunnels at a steady depth, so you check fresh chunks rather than revisiting the same stone.
Protect the budding amethyst
Geodes matter because they contain the renewable source of amethyst. Inside a geode is a budding amethyst block with an X-shaped pattern. It grows buds on its sides, and those buds mature into clusters over time.

Breaking the budding block destroys it. Pushing it with a piston also destroys it. Silk Touch does not change this. Leave the block in place and note its coordinates so you can return later to harvest mature clusters.

Shards are used in crafting. The developer article described spyglass and tinted glass recipes as they stood at publication. Check the recipe book in your current version before crafting, because recipes can change between updates.

Edition and version differences
- Java Edition 1.18 notes say geodes generate only up to height 30, which matches the upper limit in the official article.
- Bedrock Edition 1.17 notes describe geodes as underground features in newly generated Overworld chunks.
- Existing worlds: the sources do not establish whether a chunk generated before an update will gain a geode afterward. Do not assume it will.
What the sources do not establish
- No surface marker or guaranteed shortcut for finding a geode is documented.
- The official article does not provide a cross-edition technical specification or a version-by-version change history.
- The one-in-24 chunk estimate is not broken down by edition, region or world type.
