Find the Bookseller’s stall across the river, above JojaMart on the east side of Pelican Town. He visits twice each season on randomly selected dates; check the town calendar for a balloon icon. On a visit day, the shop is open all day and the game announces, “The Bookseller is in town today.”

Where is the Bookseller in Stardew Valley?

Head to the eastern side of town and cross the river. The Bookseller’s separate stall is above JojaMart—not inside the store. If JojaMart has become the Movie Theater in your save, look above the theater in the same area. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Bookseller reference and a Siliconera guide both identify this location.

When does the Bookseller come?

He visits twice per season, on two randomly selected dates. The dates below are possible dates, not a schedule: only two from the relevant season’s list are selected. Check the in-game calendar; a balloon icon marks each selected visit day. The game also displays the notice “The Bookseller is in town today” at the start of a visit day. He is open all day.

Season Possible visit dates
Spring 11, 12, 21, 22, 25
Summer 9, 12, 18, 25, 27
Fall 4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 19, 22, 25
Winter 5, 11, 12, 19, 22, 24

These date sets and the calendar indicator are documented in the Bookseller reference.

How do you buy books from the Bookseller?

  1. Check the calendar for the balloon icon, or look for the morning arrival notice.
  2. On a visit day, go to the stall above JojaMart or the Movie Theater, across the river.
  3. Browse the available titles and purchase the book you want with in-game gold.

The assortment is random, and availability can depend on the season, year, or your progress. A particular title is not guaranteed on a specific visit, so check the stall’s current stock rather than planning around an assumed item. The Bookseller stock list includes examples such as Price Catalogue (3,000g), Way Of The Wind pt. 1 (15,000g), Horse: The Book (25,000g), and Ol’ Slitherlegs (25,000g), each listed as always available. Way Of The Wind pt. 2 costs 35,000g and becomes available after you receive the first book’s power. These are title-specific prices and conditions, not a universal price for books.

Some other titles have conditions: Queen Of Sauce Cookbook is listed for 50,000g after you have received 100 Golden Walnuts, while several power books become purchasable starting in Year 3. Skill books and other stock entries have their own prices and conditions; consult the current Bookseller list for a specific title.

What do Bookseller books do?

Books are in-game items, not physical guides. Depending on the title, reading one can grant skill experience or a lasting power. A first reading of a power book grants its listed power; most repeat readings of power books grant skill XP. In multiplayer, each player needs an individual copy and reading to receive individual benefits. Some books that have already granted their powers can also be traded to the Bookseller for specific items. See the Books reference for book effects and other ways to obtain them.

Should you buy a book when it appears?

Decide based on the book’s effect, its current gold cost, whether you already have its power, and any condition required for the stock to appear. Books can also come from other gameplay routes, so the Bookseller is not necessarily the only way to get a particular title. If you are waiting for one specific book, keep checking future visits rather than assuming it will be in stock next time.
