Terms that decide the choice
Square Enix uses “World” for what most players call a server. The World where you create a character is that character’s Home World, and it stays the same even when you visit elsewhere. Worlds are grouped into logical data centers, and logical data centers sit inside physical, regional data centers.

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| World (server) | The named world where a character is created. This is the Home World. |
| Logical data center | A group of Worlds. World Visit moves you between Worlds in the same logical data center. |
| Physical data center | The regional grouping. Data Center Travel reaches other logical data centers within the same physical region. |
Which data centers the official guide lists
The official Data Center Travel guide on the Lodestone names the following data centers by region. Only the Oceania entry is marked as unavailable for travel.
| Region | Data centers named in the guide | Data Center Travel status |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Elemental, Gaia, Mana, Meteor | Listed as available |
| North America | Aether, Crystal, Dynamis, Primal | Listed as available |
| Europe | Chaos, Light | Listed as available |
| Oceania | Materia | Currently unavailable |
How World Visit and Data Center Travel differ
Both features are temporary visits. Your character keeps its Home World, and the official guides explain how to return to it. The two features differ in how far they reach.

#1 Best Overall
- Features a vibrant cast of characters, hundreds of quests, and exciting locales to explore
- Tackle challenging dungeons and raids
- Experience all of the jobs/classes on a single character
| Feature | Where you can go | Home World changes? | Known limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| World Visit | Worlds in the same logical data center | No | Worlds that cannot be visited because of congestion or other factors are not selectable |
| Data Center Travel | Other logical data centers within the same physical region, where the region is listed as available | No | Social, market, and housing restrictions (listed below); not available for Materia at present |
The guide’s own wording says the system lets you visit Worlds “outside of your logical and physical data center.” The regional groupings it publishes are the practical boundary, and it does not list travel between physical regions as available. Do not plan around visiting friends in another region.
Restrictions while you are visiting
Data Center Travel carries restrictions that matter for social and economic play:
Rank #2
- Adventure awaits you beyond the horizon in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
- This product is a digital 60-Day Game Time Card for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. It serves as a payment option that allows players to add 60 days of game time to their FFXIV account at the Standard subscription rate, subject to account limits. Both the game and game time are required to play.
- This product can be redeemed on service accounts registered with the Windows, Mac, PlayStation, or Steam versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, it cannot be redeemed on service accounts that have only the XBOX or Nintendo Switch 2 versions registered.
- You cannot use Free Company chat, or join or leave a Free Company.
- You cannot communicate with friends in a different data center, or form a party with them, through the Friend List.
- You cannot sell on the Market Board.
- You cannot purchase housing.
- You can still purchase items on the Market Board.
If a Free Company, housing plot, or market selling is central to how you play, plan around these limits before choosing a World.
Steps before you create or transfer a character
- Choose your physical region first. Pick the region that fits where you live and where you expect to play most. The guide does not publish latency comparisons, so distance is a reasonable factor, but no source shows one region is fastest for everyone.
- Ask your friends which logical data center they are on. Sharing a logical data center gives you World Visit with no travel restrictions beyond the ones that apply to any visit. Friends in another logical data center in the same region require Data Center Travel.
- Open the Lodestone Server Status page. It shows each World’s classification and whether new characters can be created there.
- Check whether you need Home World services. If you plan to use a Free Company, sell on the Market Board, or own housing, confirm where those can be done before you settle on a World.
- Create your character on a World that is open for new characters. Stay on the status page until creation is confirmed, since availability can change.
Comparing options when more than one World works
When several Worlds fit your region, compare them on four points:

- A persistent and evolving world with immersive storylines and well-developed characters
- HD-quality, real-time cutscenes
- Guild-based activities focused on catering to players with different gaming styles
- Both quick and extensive gameplay sessions, accessible in solo and group play
- A breathtaking musical score by renowned FINAL FANTASY series composer Nobuo Uematsu
- Region and connection: which physical data center you can play from comfortably.
- Friends and community: whether close friends, or the group you want to join, sit on the same logical data center.
- Creation availability and classification: whether new characters can be created on the World now.
- Home World services: whether you need Free Company membership, market selling, or housing access on your own World.
If your friends are on a different data center
- Same logical data center: use World Visit.
- Different logical data center, same listed region: use Data Center Travel and accept its restrictions.
- Materia (Oceania): Data Center Travel is currently unavailable, so you cannot visit other data centers that way at present.
- Different physical region: the official guide does not list this as available. Choose a World in your friends’ region instead of relying on travel.
Limits of what the official sources establish
The official guides list data center and World names, but they do not publish population counts, latency figures, or descriptions of each World’s culture or raid activity. As a result, no source supports ranking one World above another on population, community style, or performance. Square Enix’s notice on World classifications says those classifications change over time with population, so older lists and reputations can be out of date. Use the live status page for the current picture.
