Feather is the clearer fit if you want to add Forge or Fabric mods through the launcher, or host a server from your own PC. Lunar is a strong fit if its integrated features suit you or you need an officially listed Linux download. Neither client has a verified FPS advantage over the other: both advertise performance improvements, but the available official information does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark.
Quick comparison: Lunar Client vs. Feather Client
| What matters to you | Better-supported fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Add personal Forge or Fabric mods in the launcher | Feather | Feather explicitly supports adding personal Forge or Fabric mods. Lunar also documents mod-loader profiles and modpack imports, but the exact version and profile matter. |
| Built-in features and HUD tools | Compare the features you actually use | Lunar advertises over 65 customizable mods; Feather advertises over 40 built-in mods. These vendor counts may use different counting methods. |
| Run the client on Linux | Lunar | Lunar lists a Linux AppImage download. Feather’s homepage lists Windows and macOS ARM downloads; that omission does not establish that Feather is incompatible with Linux. |
| Host a server from your own computer | Feather, for PC-hosted play | Feather says its server runs from the player’s PC. That is not the same as an externally hosted, always-available server. |
| Get the most FPS | No verified winner | Both promote performance features; no controlled comparison in the official sources establishes which is faster. |
| Use a client without a subscription | Either | Lunar says its core client is free, with optional purchases. The reviewed Feather page does not present a client subscription price. |
Which client is better for adding mods?
Feather: straightforward personal mod support
Feather explicitly describes adding personal Forge or Fabric mods and managing them in its launcher. If choosing a client mainly to build a custom mod setup, that direct support makes Feather the simpler recommendation. Check that your specific mod, loader, and Minecraft version work together before moving an existing setup.
Lunar: profiles, loaders, and version-specific limits
Lunar’s current support guide describes profiles with Fabric, Forge, or Vanilla options, as well as importing modpacks from Modrinth or CurseForge. That is more nuanced than the older blanket claim that Lunar cannot run custom mods. Its FAQ still notes limitations: it says mods cannot be added to versions 1.7, 1.8, or 1.12, and that Fabric mods can be added on 1.16 and later using the Fabric add-on. See Lunar’s profile setup guide and FAQ for the current setup details.
Distinguish a profile that uses Lunar’s integrated features from one configured around a mod loader. The available loader, client features, and mod compatibility can depend on the selected Minecraft version and profile. Check the launcher’s current version list and the relevant setup instructions rather than assuming every mod works in every profile.

Built-in features: compare specific tools, not just counts
Feather advertises over 40 built-in mods, including FPS, Keystrokes, and ToggleSprint. Lunar advertises over 65 customizable mods and hundreds of settings, with examples such as Keystrokes, Coordinates, Freelook, and Toggle Sprint. These are each company’s published counts, not independently audited measurements; the products may count features differently. The Feather feature page and Lunar features page are the best places to check whether a particular tool is currently included.
So Lunar has the larger advertised feature count, but that alone does not establish that it is better for your play style. If you rely on a specific HUD element or quality-of-life feature, verify that feature directly instead of choosing by the headline number.

Performance: neither has a proven FPS edge
Lunar says its optimizations often double frame rates. Feather promotes built-in enhancements and support for third-party performance mods. These are vendor claims, not results from a controlled comparison between the two clients. Actual performance can vary with hardware, Minecraft version, settings, installed mods, and the scene being rendered. Without a benchmark under matching conditions, there is no sound basis for promising that either client will produce more FPS on your PC.
Operating-system support
Lunar’s download page lists Windows 10 or later, macOS Monterey or later, and Linux AppImage distribution. Its features page describes macOS support for versions above Sierra, which differs from the download page’s stated Monterey requirement. Mac users should confirm the requirement shown for the current installer before installing. Feather’s homepage lists downloads for Windows and macOS ARM. Because that list does not establish Linux incompatibility, Linux users should verify Feather’s current options directly if considering it.

Hosting a Minecraft server
Feather advertises free server hosting that runs from the player’s PC. That may suit a small group playing while the host’s computer is running and connected, but the available information does not establish its uptime, performance, or suitability for a public always-on server.
Lunar identifies Apex Hosting as its official hosting partner on its homepage. A partner-hosted server and a server running from your own PC are different approaches, so choose based on whether you need a session tied to your computer or an externally hosted server.

Cost and server compatibility
Lunar says the client is free to use, with cosmetics and Lunar+ perks offered as optional paid extras; its FAQ says users do not miss out on client features by using the free client. The reviewed Feather page advertises its client features without stating a client subscription price. Check each product’s current terms for any optional purchases before buying.
Lunar’s FAQ says it connects to servers that support vanilla Minecraft when the selected game version is supported. That does not mean every individual server permits every client or mod: server operators set their own rules. Check the server’s client and mod policy, and confirm that the client currently supports the Minecraft version you want to play.

How to choose
- Choose Feather if adding personal Forge or Fabric mods through the launcher is your main priority, or if PC-hosted sessions meet your server needs.
- Choose Lunar if its integrated tools fit your setup or you need its officially listed Linux AppImage.
- Choose based on a specific feature if HUD or quality-of-life tools matter most; compare the exact tool rather than relying on vendor feature totals.
- Do not choose based on an assumed FPS winner. The available official claims do not establish one.
Before switching, verify the current Minecraft version, the profile and mod loader you intend to use, the operating-system requirement, and any server-specific rules. For compatibility details, consult Lunar’s FAQ and profile guide, or Feather’s official site.
