It expands the Nemesis system into a bigger web of Orc relationships, adds army building and fortress sieges, and gives you a wider world to fight across. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is the better fit if you want a tighter story and a more focused version of the original idea. “Better” here depends on whether you value scale and variety or focus and narrative containment.
What Shadow of War adds
Shadow of War is the sequel, and its official description centers on three things: building an army, conquering fortresses, and a Nemesis system that generates personal stories between you and your enemies and followers. A 2026 GamesRadar ranking describes War as widening both the world and the system, with more interconnected Orcs, adaptive enemies, and castle sieges. Those additions are the main reason the sequel is the bigger game.
Army building and fortress sieges
War’s army and siege layer is the clearest difference from its predecessor. Instead of a largely one-on-one rivalry loop, you are managing a force and taking on fortresses. Battles are larger in scope, and the progression built around them gives you more to do between story beats. If you enjoy long-term planning and bigger set pieces, this is where War separates itself.
A broader Nemesis web
The Nemesis system carries over, but War places it inside a larger network of Orcs. Enemies remember past encounters and adapt to how you fight them, and the relationships you form and break can spread across more of the map. The trade-off is that the system is spread thinner across a bigger game.

What Shadow of Mordor does better
Mordor’s strength is focus. A 2026 GamesRadar comparison praises its tighter narrative and personal rivalries, and a 2026 TechRadar retrospective singles out its captains for distinct personalities, fears, traits, and recurring vendettas. Because the game is more contained, each captain feels like a more deliberate character rather than one entry in a large roster.
If you want to see where the Nemesis concept began, Mordor is the place to start. Its loop of hunting, interrogating, and ruining individual Orc captains is simpler to learn and easier to follow from start to finish.

Features that are no longer available
This matters for how you approach the pair. The PlayStation Store notice says the Nemesis Forge feature is no longer available, which means you cannot transfer in-game Nemeses from Shadow of Mordor to Shadow of War. The same notice lists Vendetta missions and leaderboards as discontinued, and states that WBPlay is no longer available. Xbox’s Game of the Year listing shows a similar notice about those unavailable features. If you were hoping to carry a favorite captain into War, that is not possible.
A note on awards
WB Games has publicized more than 50 “Best of 2014” awards for Shadow of Mordor, including Game of the Year, Best Action Game, and Most Innovative Game. These are the publisher’s own award claims, not an independent comparative score, so they show how the game was received at the time rather than how it compares with War today.

Which one to play
- Choose Shadow of War if you want more variety, long-term progression, army building, and large fortress battles.
- Choose Shadow of Mordor if you want a tighter story, more personal captain rivalries, or the original Nemesis experience.
- Play Mordor first for context. War is the sequel, so Mordor gives you background on the characters and the system. None of the sources reviewed establish that you must finish Mordor before starting War.
