Neither twin is canon in a fixed sense. In Genshin Impact, you choose whether Aether or Lumine is the Traveler, and the other twin becomes the lost sibling in that playthrough. The official materials support this sibling premise but do not name one twin as the universal protagonist, and no current official policy page settles the question across every account or promotion.
How the choice works in your playthrough
Aether and Lumine are the twin siblings at the center of the story. At the start of the game you pick which of them is the Traveler. The one you pick is the protagonist you control, and the other becomes the sibling you are searching for. Lumine is the female twin and Aether the male twin, so picking the female Traveler means playing as Lumine.
That makes “canon” a question about the playthrough rather than the franchise. The sibling who is missing in one account is the Traveler in another. Calling either twin the “real” canon Traveler would mean ranking one player choice above the other, and the game does not do that in its own structure.
What the official wording says
The official Genshin Impact game page describes the premise this way: “As a traveler from another world, you will embark on a journey to reunite with your long-lost sibling and unravel the mysteries of Teyvat, and yourself.” The line establishes that the Traveler has a sibling and that reuniting with them drives the story. It does not say which twin is the Traveler, and it does not describe one twin as the default.

- Genshin Impact "Ode to a Sweet Afternoon" Furina Chibi Figure
The Version Luna I update notice, dated September 10, 2025, is an official game update source, but it does not rule on which twin is canon. Official update notices change the game’s content over time, so check the game’s official news page for anything newer than that date before treating any detail here as current.
What the support reply says, and what it does not
A secondary report from 2021 quotes a Genshin Impact customer-support representative as saying: “Both Lumine and Aether can be the Traveler. The choice is ultimately up to the player.” That is the closest thing to a direct answer in the material reviewed. It supports the idea that both twins are valid selections.

Treat it with care. The report does not name the representative, and it only describes the reply as coming from customer support. It is a secondary account of a 2021 reply, not a published canon policy, so it should not be presented as the company’s current official position.
The community explanation
A HoYoLAB community post describes the same arrangement in player terms: if the female Traveler is chosen, Aether is the sibling associated with the Abyss Order, and if the male Traveler is chosen, Lumine is that sibling. This is a useful way to understand how players talk about the story, but it is community-authored commentary rather than an official source on canon.
Source comparison
| Source | Type | Date | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official game page | Primary, promotional copy | Not stated in the reviewed material | The Traveler has a long-lost sibling to reunite with | Which twin is the universal Traveler |
| Version Luna I update notice | Primary, official update | September 10, 2025 | Official game content update occurred on that date | A canon ruling on either twin |
| Secondary report of a support reply | Secondary account | 2021 | A support representative said either twin can be the Traveler | A current official policy, or the representative’s name |
| HoYoLAB community post | Community commentary | Not stated in the reviewed material | How the female and male Traveler choices map to the sibling | Official canon status |
Where the canon question remains open
The official sources reviewed do not decide whether one sibling should be treated as universal canon across all accounts, or whether a promotional depiction makes one twin the preferred version. Some marketing and fan art may show one twin more prominently, but that does not change the structure of the game, where the player decides the Traveler.
If you are writing, citing, or debating this, the accurate answer is that the player picks the Traveler, both twins are valid selections according to the 2021 secondary report, and no current official canon ruling was found in the sources reviewed.
