If you want a first-person shooter built around action, confrontations and exotic locations, choose Far Cry. If you want historical open-world action-adventure with stealth and traversal at its core, choose Assassin’s Creed. Ubisoft’s own franchise descriptions draw this same line, but they are publisher marketing rather than independent reviews, and both series have changed considerably from one entry to the next, so the right choice depends on which specific game you are considering.
Start with the gameplay you want
The clearest way to choose is to compare what each franchise asks you to do most of the time. The table below uses the descriptions in Ubisoft’s franchise pages and game pages. Where those pages do not address a point, the cell says so rather than guessing.
| Question | Far Cry | Assassin’s Creed |
|---|---|---|
| Core identity | First-person shooter with action-packed stories and exotic settings, according to Ubisoft’s Far Cry brand overview | Historical open-world action-adventure combining stealth and RPG elements, according to Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed brand overview |
| Main combat style | Shooting and action-led encounters | A mix of stealth, traversal and combat; the balance shifts between entries |
| Stealth | Present in some entries; Far Cry 6 offers stealth options, including using its companion Chorizo to distract enemies (Far Cry 6 page) | Central to stealth-focused entries such as Mirage and Shadows, which describe takedowns, scouting and tools (Shadows page) |
| Setting | Exotic environments; Far Cry 6 is set in a modern guerrilla conflict | Pivotal historical periods |
| Villains | Described by Ubisoft as charismatic, with Far Cry 3’s Vaas cited as an example | Not stated in the cited Ubisoft brand overview |
| Best fit | Players who want shooting and confrontation as the main draw | Players who want history, stealth and movement through large worlds |
How Ubisoft describes each franchise
Ubisoft’s Far Cry brand page says the games are “known for their exotic settings, action packed stories, innovative first-person shooter mechanics, and for featuring charismatic villains like Far Cry 3’s Vaas.” The Assassin’s Creed brand page describes the series as “combining the action-adventure open world genre, with stealth and RPG elements.” Both are useful for understanding how the publisher positions each series, but neither is a verdict on quality.
Assassin’s Creed is not one play style
Treating Assassin’s Creed as a single experience leads to disappointment. Ubisoft’s own guide to playing the series in order notes substantial shifts between entries, so check the specific game before you commit. The examples below come from that guide and from the pages for the newer entries.

Black Flag: naval open world
Black Flag centres on Caribbean naval play. If ship combat and sea travel appeal to you, this is the entry that delivers it most directly.
Unity: Paris traversal and combat
Unity is built around Paris, with its emphasis on traversal and combat. It is a good example of a historical setting driving the gameplay rather than sitting in the background.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Origins: more open-ended combat
Origins moves toward more open-ended combat. Players who found earlier entries too rigid may find it more flexible, while players who want a tighter stealth focus may not.
Mirage and Shadows: stealth-forward entries
The Mirage and Shadows pages describe parkour, tools, scouting and stealth takedowns. These are the entries to consider first if stealth is the main reason you are choosing the series. Ubisoft’s guide to playing the Assassin’s Creed games in order is useful if you want the story as well as the mechanics.

Far Cry is not only shooting
Far Cry is the clearer pick for shooting, but its entries are not identical. Far Cry 6 pairs its guerrilla shooter premise with stealth opportunities and co-op play, so a player who wants a stealth-leaning shooter can find that in the series. A player who wants the shooting to be the whole experience should check each game’s description before buying, because the balance between shooting and stealth varies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the platform and edition before buying
Platform availability is set per game, not per franchise. Ubisoft’s Shadows page lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Amazon Luna, Apple-silicon Macs and Windows PC. That list reflects the page when it was reviewed for this article, and storefront lists change, so confirm before you buy.

How big each franchise is
Ubisoft publishes player and sales figures for each franchise. The most recent figures in the sources reviewed come from its 2025 press kit and an October 2024 company statement. They measure different things, so they are not directly comparable as a measure of quality.
| Measure | Far Cry | Assassin’s Creed |
|---|---|---|
| Unique players | 100 million (Ubisoft, October 2024) | 155+ million (Ubisoft 2025 press kit) |
| Units sold | 60+ million since Far Cry 2 (Ubisoft 2025 press kit) | 230 million (Ubisoft 2025 press kit) |
Older Ubisoft about pages give lower counts, of more than 60 million Far Cry unique players and more than 140 million Assassin’s Creed players. Those figures are out of date, so use the newer ones and keep their dates attached when you cite them.
Limits of this comparison
The Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed brand pages are publisher descriptions. They tell you what Ubisoft intends each series to offer, not how players rate it. The sources reviewed do not include independent review scores or any evidence that one series will suit more players, so the recommendation above is a preference-based guide, not a ranking.
If you are still undecided, pick the game whose core activity you would most enjoy repeating for dozens of hours. That is the best test the available evidence supports.
