The original Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite are not region-locked for DS software. The Nintendo DSi and DSi XL are split: most older DS and DS Lite cards play across regions, but DSi-exclusive game cards and DSi Shop downloads are region-specific. The Nintendo 3DS family is region-locked for 3DS software, though it still plays most DS games. Which rule applies depends on the console model and on the type of software you are trying to run.
Region behavior by console
“Nintendo DS” covers several hardware generations, and each one follows a different rule. The table below summarizes Nintendo’s support guidance for each model.

| System | Region behavior | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo DS | Generally region-free for DS software | DS cards from any region are generally playable. A few titles depend on accessories, such as a Game Boy Advance cartridge in the GBA slot. |
| Nintendo DS Lite | Generally region-free for DS software | Same rule as the original DS. Accessory-dependent titles still apply. |
| Nintendo DSi | Partly region-locked | Most older DS and DS Lite cards work across regions. DSi-exclusive cards and DSi Shop downloads are region-specific. |
| Nintendo DSi XL | Partly region-locked | Same split as the DSi: older DS cards are broadly region-free, while DSi-exclusive cards and DSi Shop downloads are region-specific. |
| Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL | Region-locked for 3DS software | 3DS software is restricted to hardware for the country where it was released. Most DS games still play on these systems, with the exceptions covered below. |
Original DS and DS Lite
Nintendo’s DSi support material describes older DS and DS Lite software as region-free. Nintendo’s exact wording is that older Nintendo DS and DS Lite software “is region-free, so you can play most of that software on a Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL from any region.” The word “most” matters. Region freedom describes the card format, not every individual title, so a game that needs a specific accessory or add-on can still fail even when the cartridge itself is not locked.
DSi and DSi XL: a split rule
The DSi and DSi XL are the only models in this family where the answer depends on the software type rather than the hardware alone.

#1 Best Overall
- The DS Lite system is a region free device, it can plays all Nintendo DS Lite games and Gameboy Advance Games
DSi-exclusive game cards
Cards built for DSi-exclusive software are region-specific. Nintendo says these cards do not work on a system from another region. If you buy an imported DSi-exclusive game, the DSi or DSi XL you play it on needs to match that region.
DSi Shop downloads
Software bought through the DSi Shop is also region-specific. A download purchased in one region is tied to that region’s shop and hardware, so it should not be assumed to transfer to a DSi from elsewhere.

- Get up to 19 hours continuous gameplay on one charge
- Ready to take on the world? With Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, you can connect wirelessly, chat with friends while you play and compete with Nintendo DS owners across the globe. All you need to play is a Nintendo DS and a Wi-Fi-ready game
- Twin ultra bright LCD screens that combine crisp, punchy colors, along with touch-screen technology on the lower screen
- Powerful dual processors bring 3D graphics to life with lightning-fast rendering
Older DS cards on a DSi
Standard DS and DS Lite cards are the easy case. They are the reason a DSi or DSi XL can play most of an older library regardless of where it was bought.
3DS family: region-locked
Nintendo’s 3DS-family support page confirms that the Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, and New Nintendo 2DS XL “are region locked.” Nintendo gives the reason as: “Region locking enables Nintendo to include parental controls and more efficiently deliver region-specific system and menu updates to users.” For 3DS software, the practical rule is simple. A 3DS game should be matched to a console from the same region where the game was released.

Changing the 3DS country setting does not solve it
Nintendo says the country setting on a 3DS-family system cannot be changed to a country outside the region where the device was purchased. Changing that setting is not a workaround for importing 3DS games, and you should not rely on it.
Compatibility exceptions when playing DS games on 3DS
Most DS games play on 3DS-family hardware, but several exceptions apply:

- GBA-slot games. The 3DS family has no Game Boy Advance slot. DS titles that depend on a GBA cartridge in that slot will not run as intended on a 3DS.
- DSi-enhanced software from outside PAL. Nintendo UK’s support guidance notes that some DSi games purchased outside the PAL region may not work on a PAL 3DS.
- Title-specific requirements. Some games have their own special requirements. Check the game packaging, the manual, or Nintendo’s title-specific support guidance before buying.
How to check before you buy
- Identify the exact console model. The original DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, and 3DS-family systems follow different rules.
- Identify the game type: standard DS card, DSi-exclusive card, DSi Shop download, or 3DS software.
- For standard DS and DS Lite cards, check only for accessory requirements such as a GBA-slot cartridge.
- For DSi-exclusive cards and DSi Shop downloads, match the game’s region to the DSi or DSi XL you will use.
- For 3DS software, match the game’s release region to the console. Do not plan around changing the 3DS country setting.
- If you are buying a DSi game from outside PAL for a PAL 3DS, confirm compatibility for that title first.
Used listings do not always state a game’s regional origin clearly. If the listing or packaging is unclear, treat the region as unverified until you have checked the cartridge label and packaging.
