It depends on your Minecraft edition. In Bedrock, a Fletcher offers one emerald for 15–20 string. In Java 26.3, a novice Fisherman offers one emerald for 20 string, and a journeyman Fletcher offers one emerald for 14 string.
String-for-emerald trades by edition
| Edition and source | Villager | Trade level | String you give | Emeralds you receive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock stable, Microsoft vanilla trade table | Fletcher | First listed trade tier | 15–20 | 1 |
| Java 26.3, Astroworld listing checked 2026-10-06 | Fisherman | Novice | 20 | 1 |
| Java 26.3, Astroworld listing checked 2026-10-06 | Fletcher | Journeyman | 14 | 1 |
Microsoft’s Bedrock Fletcher trade table specifies a string quantity randomly selected from 15 to 20, not a quantity the player chooses. Microsoft’s trade-table documentation explains how quantity ranges work. Java’s figures come from Astroworld Minecraft Trades, which says it checked the Java 26.3 shipped trade files on 2026-10-06; it is a secondary reference.
How to find the right offer
In Bedrock
- Find a Fletcher villager and open its trade screen.
- Look for the offer that takes string and gives one emerald. Microsoft’s stable table lists it as the Fletcher’s first trade tier; the quantity is 15–20 string.
In Java
- Check a novice Fisherman’s offers for the 20-string exchange.
- For the Fletcher exchange, check a journeyman Fletcher’s offers for the 14-string exchange.
A trade at a later villager level will not appear until that villager reaches the required level. The listed Java quantities and professions are version-specific; the Bedrock Fletcher offer should not be treated as a universal trade across editions.
Do not confuse it with the arrow trade
Microsoft’s Bedrock table also lists a Fletcher trade in which the player gives an emerald and receives 8–12 arrows. That exchange runs in the opposite direction from selling string for an emerald.
