In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Snorlax with strong physical attacks is the most straightforward choice, and Slowbro with Surf is a workable alternative. In the original Red and Blue, rely on a high-damage physical attacker and prepare a backup for her fast Alakazam. In Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, the suggested options are Alolan Raticate with Crunch, Magneton, or your strongest Pokémon that is not weak to Psychic.
Identify your game first
Sabrina leads Saffron Gym as a Psychic specialist in several Kanto titles, and her gym uses warp panels to move the player around the arena. The reward TM also differs by release: Psywave in Generation I (Red and Blue), Calm Mind in FireRed and LeafGreen, and Calm Mind in Let’s Go. Her roster, levels, and moves change between these games, so a counter that works in one may be a poor choice in another. The sections below treat each game separately.
FireRed and LeafGreen
This is the version where Sabrina has the clearest, most widely recommended answer.
Snorlax with physical attacks
Snorlax is the practical pick here. Its bulk lets it absorb Sabrina’s Psychic attacks, and its strong physical moves punish her team. Body Slam is a physical option that needs no special purchase. If you have the Shadow Ball TM, it is a strong optional move, because in Generation III Ghost-type moves use the physical damage category. Snorlax is also a sensible choice given how limited Ghost and Dark options are at this point in the story.

Slowbro with Surf
Slowbro is a viable alternative. Smogon’s guidance describes it as performing well against Sabrina, but its low Speed is the trade-off. Slowbro can take damage and status effects before it gets to act, so it works best when you accept that it may need to recover mid-battle.
Why the category matters
Choose attacks by their damage category, not only by type. In Generation III the category is set by type, which is why Shadow Ball counts as physical here. Later generations assign categories move by move, and Shadow Ball is special from Generation IV onward. A move that works well in FireRed and LeafGreen does not necessarily play the same way in a later game.

Red and Blue
Serebii lists Sabrina’s team as follows (the page does not state the year it was published):
- Kadabra, Level 38
- Mr. Mime, Level 37
- Venomoth, Level 38
- Alakazam, Level 43
Kadabra and Alakazam have poor Defense, so a high-damage physical move is the most reliable plan. Alakazam is very fast and uses Reflect to raise its Defense, so bring a backup in case your main attacker cannot finish it. Venomoth can confuse, poison, or paralyze, so plan for status effects before entering the battle.
Rank #3
Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!
The suggestions for these games differ from the Generation I and III games, because the Pokémon available and the type matchups are different.
Alolan Raticate and Magneton
iMore recommends Alolan Raticate with Crunch, which is a Dark-type move that hits Sabrina’s Psychic Pokémon. Magneton is also suggested. If you have neither, pick the strongest Pokémon on your team that is not weak to Psychic.

Avoid Gastly and its line
Gastly and its evolutions are Ghost and Poison. Poison is weak to Psychic, so Sabrina’s Psychic attacks hit this line hard. Ghost typing does not make them a safe type-based counter in this matchup. Sabrina’s roster also includes dual-typed Pokémon, so one move that works well against one target may be weak against another.
Quick comparison
| Game | Suggested pick | Main advantage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| FireRed and LeafGreen | Snorlax with Body Slam or Shadow Ball | Bulk plus strong physical damage | Shadow Ball requires the TM; Body Slam is the no-purchase option |
| FireRed and LeafGreen | Slowbro with Surf | Surf damage | Low Speed; can take hits before attacking |
| Red and Blue | High-damage physical attacker with a backup for Alakazam | Exploits Sabrina’s poor Defense | Alakazam is fast; Venomoth can inflict status |
| Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! | Alolan Raticate with Crunch, or Magneton | Crunch is strong against Psychic types | Gastly line is weak to Psychic; dual-typed foes may need different answers |
