Roblox came first. The company was founded in 2004, and Roblox’s official anniversary history reaches back to 2006. Minecraft’s first version for PC arrived in 2009, and its full version followed in 2011. The answer depends on which milestone you mean, so the sections below separate founding, platform history, first version, and full release.
The short answer
If you compare the earliest official dates for each product, Roblox is older by several years. Roblox’s company information states that Roblox was founded in 2004. Minecraft’s official material says its first version was released in 2009 for PC players, with the full version releasing in 2011, as described on the official Minecraft about page.
Roblox’s dates
Roblox has more than one relevant date, and they describe different things.
2004: company founding
Roblox’s official company information gives 2004 as the year the company was founded. This is the date to use when asking when the business started.

2006: platform history
Roblox’s 2026 anniversary post, “Join The Hunt: Roblox 20”, places the platform’s history back to 2006. That is an anniversary account, not a statement of an exact public-launch day. The sources available for this article do not establish a specific launch date, so it is safest to describe 2006 as the start of the platform’s history rather than a launch date.
Minecraft’s dates
Minecraft’s official material separates its first release from its full release, and it also gives a specific day for an early milestone.

2011: full version
The same official page states that the full version released in 2011. Full release is a separate milestone from the first version, so it should not be used as the answer to “when did Minecraft start.”
Side-by-side milestones
| Milestone | Roblox | Minecraft |
|---|---|---|
| Company founded | 2004, per Roblox Company Information | Not stated as a company founding date in the sources used here |
| Earliest platform or product history | 2006, per Roblox’s 2026 anniversary post; no exact launch day stated | May 17, 2009 for Cave Game, per the 15th Anniversary cape article |
| First version | Not stated as a separate first-version year | 2009 for PC, per the official about page |
| Full release | Not applicable as a separate milestone in the sources used | 2011, per the official about page |
Comparing like with like
The fairest comparisons pair the same kinds of milestones. Roblox’s 2004 founding is earlier than Minecraft’s 2009 first version, and Roblox’s 2006 platform history is also earlier than Minecraft’s first version. Comparing Roblox’s founding with Minecraft’s full release, however, mixes two different kinds of dates and makes the gap look different than it is.

Both products are sandbox-style creative spaces. Minecraft’s official page describes it as an open-world sandbox game, and Roblox’s official company material describes virtual worlds built largely by players. They are separate products with separate histories, so the shared style does not mean they share a launch date.

- Roblox was founded in 2004, with platform history reaching back to 2006.
- Minecraft’s first version for PC was released in 2009, and its full version in 2011.
- Minecraft’s early Cave Game debut is dated May 17, 2009 in the official anniversary article.
Use “founded” for Roblox’s company start, “history reaches back to” for its 2006 platform history, and “first version” or “full release” for Minecraft. Those terms keep the answer accurate.
