Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNo website can be recommended as safe for downloading pirated games. Official US consumer and law-enforcement guidance advises against unfamiliar free-game sites and peer-to-peer (P2P) downloads, and the FBI warns that pirated game files can contain hidden malware. Nothing in that guidance names a piracy site as trustworthy, and no precaution turns a pirated download into a safe or lawful one.
Why no piracy site can be vouched for
A piracy site is a source of files that the rights holder has not authorized for distribution. Whoever runs the site controls what gets uploaded, repackaged, or swapped out, and a visitor has no reliable way to confirm that a game installer is the original, uncompromised build. A clean-looking page, a high user rating, or a long track record does not establish that a file is free of malware. That is the core reason official guidance does not single out any site.
What the official warnings say

A “residential proxy” means the infected device’s internet connection is rented out or used to route other people’s traffic, which can make your home network a channel for criminal activity. The same advisory recommends downloading software only from official trusted application stores and installing software updates.
FBI consumer alert on pirated software (2013)
An older FBI consumer alert on pirated software describes the broader risk: malicious code bundled with cracked or pirated programs can lead to credential theft and data harm. It is useful for understanding the types of damage involved, but it does not measure how often that damage occurs today.

What can go wrong with a pirated game file
Based on the federal guidance above, a malicious file bundled with a pirated game can lead to:
- Theft of stored logins, saved passwords, and personal information.
- Corrupted or deleted files on the device.
- Ransomware, which locks files until a payment is demanded.
- Unwanted browser redirects and unauthorized advertising software.
- The device being enrolled in a residential proxy network and used in criminal activity without its owner’s knowledge.
None of these sources establish how often a given pirated game carries malware, so a single download should not be assumed to be infected, and it should not be assumed to be clean.
What the FBI’s enforcement figures do and do not show
In July 2025 the FBI Atlanta Field Office announced the seizure of several video-game piracy domains. Its July 10, 2025 announcement reported two case-specific figures:
Rank #4
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
- 3.2 million downloads: the FBI said its records indicated this many downloads through the most-used download service on the named piracy sites between February 28 and May 28, 2025.
- An estimated $170 million loss: the FBI’s estimate tied to that specific enforcement action.
These numbers describe one case. They are not an estimate of all game piracy, nor of the rate of malware among pirated games. The seized domains should not be treated as sources, and this article does not link to them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Legal exposure
The FTC’s 2003 consumer alert on file-sharing warned that users may download copyrighted material and face legal issues as a result. Copyright law and its penalties differ by country and by the facts of each case, so this article does not state a universal penalty. Readers with a specific legal question should consult current official sources in their jurisdiction or a qualified lawyer.
If you have already downloaded and run a suspicious file
Follow these steps in order. They reduce exposure, but they cannot guarantee that every threat has been found.
- Stop using sensitive accounts on that device. Do not sign in to banking, email, work, or cloud accounts until the device has been checked.
- Disconnect the device from networks you do not need if you suspect it has been enrolled in a proxy network or is sending data.
- Update your security software and run a full scan. The FTC advises using security software and keeping it current.
- Change passwords from a device you trust, starting with email and financial accounts, if you believe credentials may have been exposed.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for those accounts.
- Get help from a trusted technician if the scan finds something, if the device behaves strangely, or if you are unsure whether it is clean. Reinstalling the operating system from a known-good source is the most thorough option when the device cannot be verified.
How to get a game safely
The alternative to piracy is buying or downloading the game from an authorized source. The sources reviewed do not compare specific retailers, so use the checks below rather than a brand name:
- Provenance: Confirm the store is authorized by the game’s publisher or platform. Find the link on the publisher’s or platform’s own official website rather than through a search ad or a forum post.
- Delivery: Download through the store’s official client or its verified domain. Be wary of files delivered by a mirror, an ad, or a third-party redirect.
- Updates and support: Check that the seller provides updates and account support for the platform you use.
- Compatibility and refunds: Read the current listing for device compatibility and the store’s refund policy before you pay.
Retailer terms and availability change, so check the current official listing before buying.
