Bowser is Mario’s biggest rival. Nintendo’s own character profile calls him Mario’s “archrival,” and it describes him as the character who keeps causing trouble in the Mushroom Kingdom. Wario is the only other character who gets a rival label on Nintendo’s pages, but Nintendo attaches a qualifier to it that changes what the label means.
Bowser: the rival Nintendo names outright
Nintendo identifies Bowser as the King of the Koopas and states, “Bowser is Mario’s archrival and is always causing trouble in the Mushroom Kingdom.” The same profile says that Bowser’s plans are regularly foiled by Mario and his friends. That combination, a formal “archrival” label plus a recurring pattern of conflict, is why Bowser is the most direct answer to the question.
The label is Nintendo’s, not a fan consensus, and it describes the character’s role in the series rather than a sales or popularity ranking.
Wario: a rival who claims the title
Nintendo’s profile for Wario uses different wording: “The self-professed archrival of Mario.” The word “self-professed” is the point. Nintendo is reporting that Wario presents himself as Mario’s rival, not stating that Mario’s rivalry with Wario is a settled fact in the same way it is with Bowser.

The profile also says the two have known each other since they were babies, which gives Wario a genuine history with Mario. That history supports him as a credible second answer, but it does not move him above Bowser in Nintendo’s own framing.
Waluigi: Luigi’s rival who also targets Mario
Waluigi is often mistaken for a Mario rival because of his scheming, but Nintendo’s Play Nintendo page frames him around Luigi: “Wario’s sidekick and Luigi’s biggest rival (or so he thinks).” The page also says he schemes to defeat both Mario and Luigi. So Waluigi is a real antagonist to the Mario brothers, but Nintendo’s stated rivalry runs toward Luigi.

Side-by-side comparison
| Character | Nintendo’s wording | Whose rival they are, per that wording | Role in recurring conflict | Who makes the claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bowser | “Mario’s archrival” | Mario | Always causing trouble in the Mushroom Kingdom; plans often foiled by Mario and friends | Nintendo states it directly |
| Wario | “The self-professed archrival of Mario” | Mario (self-described) | Long-standing acquaintance with Mario since childhood, per the profile | Wario claims the label |
| Waluigi | “Luigi’s biggest rival (or so he thinks)” | Luigi (self-described) | Schemes to defeat both Mario and Luigi | Waluigi claims the label, aimed at Luigi |
Why there is no official ranking of “biggest”
Nintendo’s character pages describe roles and relationships. They do not rank characters by how often they appear, how many games they feature in, or how strongly fans identify with them, and they do not publish a measurable definition of “biggest.” An answer that says Bowser is the biggest rival is therefore an interpretation of Nintendo’s explicit wording, not a statistic. If you need a stronger claim, such as which rival appears in the most games, you would need a separate count from a source that defines its method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to answer this if someone pushes back
- If they mean the main recurring villain: Bowser, because Nintendo calls him Mario’s archrival outright.
- If they mean the rival who openly competes with Mario: Wario, with Nintendo’s “self-professed” qualifier kept intact.
- If they mean Luigi’s rival: Waluigi, who also schemes against Mario.
Quoting the exact wording matters here. Attribute each phrase to Nintendo’s official character pages, and keep “self-professed” in any Wario quotation.
