Spoilers for Ghost of Tsushima: Khotun Khan kills Taka in the main-story mission “A Reckoning in Blood.” After Khan frees Taka and gives him a sword, Taka turns to attack Khan, who kills him.
How Taka dies
Taka’s death happens after Jin and Taka are captured at Fort Koyasan and brought before Khotun Khan. Bound beside Jin, Taka is freed by Khan and handed a sword. Khan offers Taka freedom if he kills Jin; instead, Taka turns toward Khan and is killed. The killer is Khan, while Taka’s attempt to strike him is the immediate trigger.

What happens to Yuna afterward
Yuna, Taka’s sister, arrives after the confrontation and finds out that her brother is dead. Jin and Yuna later bury Taka after fighting off another attack. Yuna no longer blames Jin for Taka’s death and chooses to stay on Tsushima to fight the Mongols.
Where Taka’s death fits in the story
“A Reckoning in Blood” is part of Jin’s fight to save Tsushima during the Mongol invasion. Sucker Punch describes the game’s central premise as “A lone Samurai survives the Mongol invasion of Tsushima, and is forced to reinvent himself to save his island home.” PlayStation.Blog published that retrospective by Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming on July 16, 2020. The developer’s official Q&A likewise describes Jin’s transformation from samurai into the Ghost as the main story.
