The Aserai ruler in the official lore of Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is Sultan Unqid, head of the Banu Hulyan clan. “King” is a convenient shorthand for the question, but sultan is his in-world title.
Who rules the Aserai?
TaleWorlds, the game’s developer, names Unqid as the Aserai sultan in its official developer blog. The official Aserai page describes the people and their setting.
The Aserai live in the Nahasa desert. Their clans and sub-clans claim descent from the legendary patriarch Asera. Rather than describing a simple, centralized hereditary monarchy, TaleWorlds presents the Aserai as a confederacy of clans: the clans agreed to unite under a sultan chosen from the Banu Hulyan, which the developer describes as the richest clan. Unqid is the named ruler in that lore.
Does Unqid remain ruler in every campaign?
No. Unqid is the ruler identified by the official lore, not a guarantee about the state of every player’s save. Events and choices in a campaign can change its political situation, so the answer to who rules in a particular playthrough may differ.
Why is he called a sultan, not a king?
“Sultan” is the title TaleWorlds uses for Unqid. Calling him “king” gets at the broad question of who rules the faction, but it is not his stated in-world title. TaleWorlds also says the Aserai draw inspiration from Arab tribes before the seventh-century Islamic conquests; that is the developer’s creative inspiration, not a claim that the fictional Aserai directly represent a historical people.
