The Nintendo Switch is intended for a broad audience—not just children. Nintendo has described its audience as including children, young adults, parents, and dedicated gamers, with games for different tastes and play styles. That is the company’s positioning, not a measured breakdown of who owns the console.
Who does Nintendo say the Switch is for?
Nintendo’s launch-era description was deliberately broad. In a 2017 TIME interview, then Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé said the audience would include “Kids, young adults, parents, gamers.” He explained that different games would appeal to different parts of that audience: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to active gamers, for example, and 1-2-Switch as an all-family experience.
In a 2019 TIME interview, then Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser said Nintendo aimed to provide “games for every type of gamer.” He described family-friendly games alongside other genres and artistic styles. These statements explain Nintendo’s strategy; they are not demographic studies of Switch owners.
Is the Switch just for kids?
No. The platform includes family-friendly games, but Nintendo’s stated aim is broader. Players may be drawn to party games, Nintendo franchises, or other genres and styles. The suitability of a particular game depends on that game’s content and regional age rating, not simply on the fact that it runs on a Switch.

What do player numbers and game sales tell us?
Nintendo reported 129 million annual playing users across Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 for July 2024 through June 2025. The figure counts registered Nintendo Accounts that used software at least once during that period; it is not a count of distinct people or an age breakdown. Nintendo excludes accounts whose users did not agree to share information, does not count services such as eShop as play, and notes that data may be revised as systems connect to the internet. See Nintendo’s hardware sell-through and annual playing users data.
Lifetime software sales also show that different franchises have found large audiences, but they do not reveal buyers’ or players’ ages. In Nintendo’s worldwide figures as of June 30, 2026, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had sold 71.53 million units, Animal Crossing: New Horizons 50.29 million, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 38.14 million, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 34.06 million, and Super Mario Odyssey 30.80 million. Nintendo says its totals include bundled and downloadable copies. The figures are listed on its Switch software sales page.

An independent 2024 opt-in survey offers a snapshot of its respondents, not all Switch owners. Hanafuda Report said 39% of respondents were aged 31–40, 22% were 25–30, 16% were 41–50, and 4.3% were under 18. Participants were reached through the report’s newsletter and gaming-community channels, including Discord, social networks, news coverage, and Reddit. Because the sample was self-selected, those percentages should not be treated as the age distribution of Switch owners.
Can families and parents use the Switch?
Yes. Nintendo says Switch and Switch 2 parental controls can restrict games based on age ratings, limit communication and eShop purchases, and manage other functions. The free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for smart devices lets guardians review software use and hours played and set daily play-time limits. Nintendo’s parental-controls information explains the available options.

For a child, check the age rating and content of each game in the relevant region, then choose restrictions that fit the child and household. Parental controls can help families manage use; their presence does not make the console exclusively a children’s product.

- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Game preferences: Consider whether the available family and party experiences, Nintendo franchises, or other genres suit the player.
- Where you want to play: The Switch supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play, so consider whether the household will use one or several of those settings.
- Who will share it: An individual player, siblings, parents and children, or a household with varied tastes may have different needs.
- Family settings: If a child will use the system, check the regional game ratings and whether rating restrictions, communication controls, eShop limits, and play-time settings meet your needs.
Nintendo’s audience statements support these as useful ways to think about fit. They do not establish how owners break down by age, gender, or household role; Nintendo’s cited player count measures account activity, not demographics.
