There is no official female version of Link in the mainline The Legend of Zelda games. The closest official counterpart is Linkle, a separate character tied to the Hyrule Warriors spin-off. Sheik is often suggested for the same role, but Nintendo identifies Sheik as Princess Zelda in disguise.
Linkle: the closest official counterpart
Linkle is the character most often named when people ask for a female Link. Nintendo’s official Hyrule Warriors materials describe her and her Crossbow content, and they associate her with Hyrule Warriors: Legends. She is a related but distinct character, not a gender-swapped version of the same hero.
Nintendo UK’s game page also notes that new copies of Legends included a code for downloading Linkle and other characters into the Wii U version of Hyrule Warriors. That was a bundle offer tied to the original release period. It is not a current way to unlock her, so do not expect the code to work today.
How Linkle’s concept changed during development
In a December 2015 interview with Eiji Aonuma, the Zelda producer, Nintendo Life reported that Koei Tecmo first proposed Linkle as Link’s younger sister for the Wii U version of Hyrule Warriors. That idea clashed with Aryll, Link’s sister in The Wind Waker, so the concept was reworked for Legends. Aonuma’s statement, as reported, was: “In Hyrule Warriors Legends, though, the proposal was to include Linkle not as Link’s sister, but as a girl with heroic aspirations.”
#1 Best Overall
- 1. Iconic Character Design Features Link from The Legend of Zelda series with game-inspired detailing and his signature blue tunic. Designed to capture the look of the hero for both play and display. 2. Includes Signature Accessories Comes with Link’s Master Sword and Hylian Shield, allowing for classic poses and display options inspired by the game. 3. Poseable Action Figure Approximately 4 inches tall with multiple points of articulation, making it easy to pose for play or display.
- 4. Ideal for Collectors and Fans Great addition to any Legend of Zelda collection. Suitable for fans of video games, action figures, and collectible toys. 5. Display-Friendly Packaging Packaged in a clear blister card, making it suitable for display while keeping the figure protected.
The result is that Linkle is written as a heroic girl in her own right, and her connection to Link is deliberately not a sibling bond. Treat that as the canonical story for her origin in the spin-off, not as a claim that she replaces Link in the main series.
Sheik is Zelda, not a female Link
Nintendo’s official character profiles for The Legend of Zelda identify Sheik as Princess Zelda in disguise, a role she takes on in Ocarina of Time. Sheik is therefore Zelda’s alternate appearance rather than a second hero with Link’s identity. That is why Sheik is a weak answer to the question, even though the two are often paired in fan discussion.

Link’s design and gender
In a June 15, 2016 interview with TIME, Aonuma said Link is male, particularly the version in Breath of the Wild. He also said he wanted the character to be one that players of any gender could relate to. That is a design goal about player identification, not a statement that Link has a female counterpart. A gender-neutral feel in play does not create a second hero.
Candidates compared
| Candidate | Identity | Game context | Relationship to Link | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Linkle | Separate heroic character | Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Legends | Related but distinct; first proposed as a sister, later written as a girl with heroic aspirations | Nintendo UK game page; Nintendo Life, December 2015 |
| Sheik | Princess Zelda in disguise | Ocarina of Time, per Nintendo | None; Zelda’s alternate appearance | Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda character profiles |
| Princess Zelda | Series heroine | Multiple Zelda games | Distinct character, not a female Link | Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda character profiles |
| Link | Male hero | Multiple Zelda games; Breath of the Wild version male per Aonuma | The baseline character | Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda character profiles; TIME, June 15, 2016 |
What the official record does not settle
The statements above establish Linkle’s role in Hyrule Warriors and explain how her concept was developed. They do not give an official ruling on whether Linkle belongs to mainline Zelda continuity. The accurate answer is that she is a spin-off character, not an established female Link in the main series.
