Yoshi is a strong all-around pick for most players, with Peach, Daisy, and Birdo offering the same listed character stats. There is no single character who is best on every course or for every driving style: your vehicle parts matter too.
Why Yoshi is a good all-around choice
Nintendo Life’s character table gives Yoshi, Peach, Daisy, and Birdo identical values: speed 3.75, acceleration 3.75, weight 3, handling 3.75, traction/grip 3.75, and mini-turbo 3.75. Those figures make Yoshi a reasonable general-purpose recommendation, but they do not show that the character has a win-rate advantage. Nintendo Life’s setup guide, published September 2, 2026, also stresses that the preferred setup depends on playstyle.
If you like one of the other three characters better, there is no stat-based reason in that table to choose Yoshi instead. Pick the one you enjoy driving.
Which character class fits your racing style?
Nintendo’s beginner guide describes broad tradeoffs among character classes. Use them as a starting point, not a guarantee that one class will perform best on every track. Nintendo’s character-and-vehicle guide recommends choosing a combination that suits your style of play.

- Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses
- Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return
- Plus, the Inklings appear as all-new guest characters, along with returning favorites, such as King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.
- Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc
- Light characters: accelerate quickly and are easier to corner. They can suit players who value recovery and maneuverability.
- Medium characters: offer a flexible option across courses, making them a sensible place to start if you do not have a strong preference.
- Heavy characters: have higher top speed and are less affected by impacts, which can appeal to players who prioritize speed and resistance to being pushed.
Does character choice matter more than your kart?
No. Character stats combine with the chosen vehicle parts, so compare the complete combination: character, kart or bike, tires, and glider. A build can emphasize priorities such as top speed, acceleration, handling, or mini-turbo; which tradeoff matters most depends on the course and how you drive. Nintendo Life’s guide recommends focusing on a few strengths or adjusting the parts to fit your preferred style.
For a simple starting point, try Yoshi with a vehicle setup that feels comfortable to steer and recover with. If races feel sluggish after a hit, consider prioritizing acceleration; if you want more top speed, try a setup that favors it. Change one part at a time so you can tell which adjustment feels better.

What about beginners and online races?
Best character for beginners
Yoshi, Peach, Daisy, or Birdo are straightforward all-around choices according to the published stat table. If cornering and getting back up to speed matter more to you than top speed, try a lighter character class; if you want a flexible starting point, try a medium class. Your comfort with the full vehicle setup matters more than picking a supposedly unbeatable character.
Best character for online races
The available evidence does not establish a single competitive champion or provide representative character pick rates or win rates. Yoshi and the three characters sharing the same listed profile are sound all-around recommendations, not proven tournament winners. Choose based on the stats and handling you prefer rather than an unsupported claim that one character dominates online.

Has a recent update changed the answer?
Nintendo’s update history lists Mario Kart 8 Deluxe version 3.0.5, released May 21, 2025, and describes platform-support additions. That history does not establish a later character-stat rebalance. See Nintendo Support’s update history for the version context.
