The Doedicurus is the best all-around stone collector in ARK in the Official ARK Community Wiki’s gathering comparison. The Gacha and Magmasaur also share its top stone-gathering rating, but the Doedicurus is especially practical if you want passive collection and reduced stone weight.
How the top stone collectors compare
The Official ARK Community Wiki uses relative ratings rather than a controlled yield-per-minute test. Its comparison places three creatures in the top stone-gathering group:
| Creature | Stone gathering rating | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Doedicurus | Top | Can gather autonomously and reduces stone weight by 75%. |
| Gacha | Top | A top-rated alternative where available. |
| Magmasaur | Top | A top-rated alternative where available. |
| Dunkleosteus, Excavation Rig, Mantis | Below the top group, above Ankylosaurus | May suit particular map or play-style constraints. |
| Ankylosaurus | Below the top group | A broad resource gatherer, particularly useful for several ores and other resources. |

Why the Doedicurus is the best general choice
It can collect stone passively
A Doedicurus set to wander can gather stone on its own; it can also be parked beside a suitable rock for autonomous collection. The Doedicurus reference says wandering collection continues until it reaches 50% weight. See the Official ARK Community Wiki’s stone page and its Doedicurus page.

It makes stone easier to haul
The Doedicurus has a listed 75% stone weight reduction, an important advantage once you have gathered a large amount. Harvesting and carrying are separate factors: a creature that gathers well may still be less convenient for moving the resulting load.
When to choose another creature
- Choose a Gacha or Magmasaur if one is available to you and fits your map, edition, or server. Both share the top rating in the cited comparison.
- Consider a Dunkleosteus, Excavation Rig, or Mantis if your circumstances make one a more practical option; the comparison rates these above Ankylosaurus but below the top group.
- Use an Ankylosaurus for broader gathering needs if stone is only one of the resources you need. It is not the top stone specialist in this comparison, but it is described as a strong gatherer for several other ores and resources. See the Official ARK Community Wiki’s Ankylosaurus page.
What the ranking does—and does not—tell you
The wiki’s ratings are a relative comparison, not a universal measurement of stone gathered per minute. They do not establish a matched test across creature stats, saddles, maps, game editions, or server settings. Creature availability and server configuration can also change which option is practical. For a general recommendation, the Doedicurus is the strongest choice because its top rating comes with autonomous gathering and a substantial stone weight reduction.
