SEGA’s official material describes him as the “ultimate lifeform,” created by a scientist named Professor Gerald. He is the central character of the new story campaign in Sonic X Shadow Generations.
How SEGA describes Shadow
SEGA’s online manual for Sonic X Shadow Generations, in its Characters section, introduces him as “The Black Hedgehog That Looks Just Like Sonic!” That single line gives the two things most readers want first: his appearance is closely modeled on Sonic’s, and his color is black. The manual does not present him as a copy or a rival in any further detail, so that framing should not be assumed.
Who created him
The manual states: “Shadow, the ultimate lifeform, was created by the brilliant scientist, Professor Gerald.” This is the origin the official manual gives. It establishes Professor Gerald as Shadow’s creator and “ultimate lifeform” as the label SEGA uses for him.
His role in Sonic X Shadow Generations
The manual’s summary says Shadow heads to the ARK after sensing that something is wrong, and that he becomes caught up in a new adventure there. SEGA Support’s overview of the game, last updated January 12, 2026, goes further on the structure of the game:

According to the same overview, the campaign’s threat is Black Doom. Shadow is therefore not just a supporting figure in this game. He is the playable lead of a separate story campaign, which is what sets the game apart from earlier entries in which he appeared alongside Sonic.

The name is written two ways across SEGA’s materials. The manual uses “Sonic × Shadow Generations,” while SEGA Support and the release announcement use “Sonic X Shadow Generations.” Both refer to the same game.
