Two opponents answer most readers’ question, depending on the part of the story: Erlang Shen, who confronts him during his rebellion against Heaven, and the Bull Demon King, a major adversary in the Flaming Mountain episode later in the pilgrimage. If you mean a film, series, or game, the answer can change, and that is covered below.
The short answer by story stage
| Story stage | Main opponent | Role | Relationship to Wukong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rebellion against Heaven (Chapter 4 onward) | Erlang Shen, with Nezha also involved | Celestial challenger sent by Heaven | A conflict tied to the rebellion itself |
| Pilgrimage, Flaming Mountain (Chapters 60–61) | The Bull Demon King | Demon adversary | Identified in the text as Wukong’s former sworn brother, so the conflict is not simple permanent enmity |
Erlang Shen and the rebellion against Heaven
Chapter 4 of the translated novel stages Nezha and Wukong as opponents, and Erlang Shen is sent to deal with him. The chapter’s narration frames the clash in these terms: “The six-armed Prince Nezha and the naturally beautiful Stone Monkey King, meeting as true equals—this was a clash of their very origins.” This line comes from the Chinese Text Project’s English rendering of Chapter 4. It is narrative description, not a statement by either character.
Erlang Shen is therefore the best short answer if you mean the early rebellion story. He is not Wukong’s enemy across the whole novel, and the rebellion is an episode with its own stakes rather than a permanent personal feud.
The Bull Demon King and the Flaming Mountain
Later in the pilgrimage, Wukong must pass the Flaming Mountain. To get past it, he seeks the plantain fan from the household of the Bull Demon King. Chapter 60 depicts a fight between the two. Chapter 61 continues the conflict and describes Nezha helping to subdue the Bull Demon King, according to the Journey to the West Read Online and Chinese Text Project chapter texts.

The relationship matters here. The text identifies the Bull Demon King as Wukong’s former sworn brother, so this is a fight between former allies rather than a standard villain-versus-hero encounter. Readers who expect a fixed nemesis will find that the novel treats these relationships more loosely.
Why the novel has no single enemy
The novel is structured as an episodic journey. Wukong travels with the monk Xuanzang, whose mission is to reach the scriptures in India, and he faces a series of demons and celestial figures along the way. Each opponent appears for one episode, and the story does not build a continuing rivalry across them.
The rebellion ends when Buddha subdues Wukong. That is a resolution of the rebellion, and the translated text does not frame Buddha as a continuing personal enemy. Treat it as the story’s closing constraint, not as a reason to name Buddha the Monkey King’s enemy.
When the question means a game or show
Adaptations can change the roster of opponents, so the answer to “who is the Monkey King’s enemy?” depends on which version you mean. The answer above covers only the classic novel. If you are asking about a game, such as the 2024 action game Black Myth: Wukong, its antagonists are written for that game and are not covered in this article. Check that game’s own story or wiki for its roster.
