Mods or custom content are a useful first check, but EA also documents problems involving game files, the EA app, saves, downloaded Gallery content, and unsupported older systems. Work through the checks below in order, and back up your Sims 4 folder before resetting files.
First, identify where the game fails
Note whether The Sims 4 gets stuck in the EA app, fails to launch, crashes before the main menu, or only stops working when you load a particular household or save. Write down any error message and the game version shown on the main menu. If you report a Mod issue, EA asks players to include the current game version.

The symptom helps choose a first check: an EA app preparation hang points toward app or launch troubleshooting; a failure that appears after enabling Mods points toward compatibility; and a problem limited to one save calls for save recovery or isolation.
Check Mods and custom content safely
EA disables Mods during game updates because content that worked before a patch can cause gameplay issues afterward. Creators may need time to update their Mods. Test once with Mods and custom content disabled, but exit without saving if you want to preserve that content in your game. EA warns that saving and exiting before re-enabling it may remove custom content and Mods from the saved game. See EA’s guidance on Mods, game updates, and error codes.

- Disable Mods and custom content, then launch the game and test the problem.
- Exit without saving.
- Check each creator’s information to see whether the content is compatible with your installed game version. Replace or remove outdated items.
- Re-enable content in batches and test after each batch. EA notes that gameplay Mods are more likely to cause problems than custom-content items. The community “50/50 method”—testing portions of a collection and narrowing down the faulty half—can help identify a troublesome batch.
If the game still fails with Mods and custom content disabled, move on to the app, file, or save checks rather than assuming Mods are responsible.
Repair the game and troubleshoot the EA app
If the game fails to launch or the EA app gets stuck preparing it, try EA’s built-in repair option first:

- Open the EA app and select Library.
- Open The Sims 4 tile’s three-dot menu and choose Repair.
- Wait for the repair to finish, then try launching the game again.
For continued launch or preparation problems, EA also lists clearing the EA app cache, turning off the in-game overlay, closing background applications, checking Windows and graphics-card updates and drivers, and performing a clean boot among possible troubleshooting steps. Back up, then isolate saves and downloaded content
A reset can help determine whether the problem is tied to files in your Sims 4 user folder, including saves or downloaded Gallery content. It starts the game without saves and Mods, so make a copy of the folder before trying it. EA’s backup and reset guide explains the reset and restoration process.

- Back up the Sims 4 folder before resetting it.
- Run the reset test and launch the game without the old saves and Mods.
- If the game works, restore backed-up folders and files selectively, testing after each addition. If a particular save brings the issue back, isolate individual save files.
If one save slot appears damaged, try an earlier available point: in the game, choose Load Game, select the save slot, choose Recover Save, and select an earlier version if one is available. EA says the Autosave slot is overwritten each time a new Autosave is triggered, while a manual save slot retains several recent save points. Details are in EA’s save recovery instructions.

If you play on an older Mac or a 32-bit Windows computer, the operating system may be the obstacle rather than the update. EA says it stopped supporting non-Metal Mac systems and 32-bit Windows at the end of 2019; the Legacy Edition is no longer available. EA’s support page identifies Metal macOS 10.11.11 or later and 64-bit Windows for continuing play. Check EA’s Legacy Edition support page for the applicable platform details.

A past update fix is not a diagnosis for every player
On March 23, 2026, EA said it had fixed a launch crash affecting 2% of players using specific types of custom content under certain circumstances. The patch note listed PC version 1.122.218.1030 and Mac version 1.122.218.1230 for that update. Those figures describe that particular issue and release; they do not establish the cause of another player’s problem or represent current game versions. See EA’s March 23, 2026 patch note.
