Xbox says only a parent using the family group feature can change those settings for a child. Other locked options—including purchases, screen time, content filters, and console preferences—can have different causes, so identify the exact setting before troubleshooting.
Identify which Xbox setting is locked
“Xbox settings” can mean several separate controls. Note the exact setting and any message on screen: privacy, multiplayer, communication, purchases, screen time, content filters, or a console preference. Microsoft documents these as distinct control areas, so a restriction on one does not establish why another is unavailable.
Also note where you are trying to change it—the Xbox console, an app, or an account page—and whether the option is grayed out, produces an error, or appears to save and then revert. Those details help distinguish an account permission issue from a problem that needs Microsoft Support.
Check whether the account belongs to a family group
Check the account’s role and family membership in the Xbox Family Settings app or at account.microsoft.com/family. Microsoft distinguishes family organizers from members; the organizer manages family permissions. If the account is a child account
Ask the parent or guardian who is the family organizer to make the change. A child account cannot independently change Xbox privacy and online settings that are controlled by the family group. The organizer should use the Family Settings app, the family portal, or the relevant Xbox menu for the specific control.
If the account is an adult but listed or treated as a child
An incorrect birth date on the Microsoft account can affect its age classification. Follow Microsoft’s instructions in Troubleshooting Microsoft Family Safety under “I’m an adult, but Microsoft thinks I’m a child.” Correct the account information through Microsoft’s process; do not enter a false birth date to get around family controls.

Use the route for the specific control
Family permissions are not all changed through one identical menu. For example, Microsoft documents this purchase-approval route on Xbox, using the organizer’s account:
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members.
- Select the family member, then choose Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download.
This path applies to purchase controls; it should not be assumed to apply to every privacy, communication, or console setting. See Microsoft’s instructions for requiring kids to ask before buying from the Microsoft Store on Xbox.

If a family restriction does not explain it
For an adult account, a non-family setting, or a change that saves and then reverts, the documented family guidance does not establish a universal fix. Avoid changing unrelated options or assuming the issue is parental control. Gather the details below and consult Microsoft Support for technical help.
- The exact setting and on-screen error wording.
- The platform where you are changing it: Xbox console, app, or account page.
- Whether the account is an adult or child account, and whether it is in a family group.
- Whether the control is grayed out, fails to save, or saves and later reverts.
Menu wording can change as Microsoft updates its interfaces. If the listed path differs on your console, use the matching setting category or Microsoft’s current instructions rather than treating the path as universal.
