The Sims 4 usually disables mods after a game update so older files don’t cause problems with the updated game. To turn script mods back on, enable both Enable Custom Content and Mods and Script Mods Allowed under Game Options > Other, apply the changes, and restart the game. Before re-enabling a mod, check whether its creator has confirmed it works with your installed patch.
Why The Sims 4 turns script mods off
EA says mods are disabled after updates to limit problems from mods that may no longer be compatible. The Sims Team describes this as intentional: “Mods and CC are disabled by design after updates.” (The Sims Team.) A setting switching off after a patch is therefore expected behavior; it does not by itself mean your save or mod is broken.
A game update can change how the game handles features that mods rely on. A mod that worked before the patch may need an update from its creator, and that update may not be available immediately. EA advises checking the creator’s compatibility notes and following their update instructions (EA Help).
How to safely re-enable script mods
- Test the updated game with mods off. Launch the game and check that it runs, as EA recommends. If you need to inspect a save, avoid saving while its mods or custom content are disabled.
- Exit without saving. Use the game menu to choose Exit Game, then confirm the exit. EA warns that saving before re-enabling content may remove that content from the save.
- Check mod compatibility. Visit each creator’s page and check compatibility with the game version currently installed. Replace outdated files according to the creator’s instructions; a mod loading before the update is not proof it remains compatible.
- Turn on both settings. Open Game Options > Other. Select Enable Custom Content and Mods and Script Mods Allowed. Apply the changes if the interface offers that option.
- Restart the game. Exit and relaunch so the settings take effect, then check whether the script mod appears or works as expected.
- Check the file location. Script mods commonly use the
.ts4scriptextension. EA Forums guidance says those files can be in theModsfolder or one subfolder below it, but not nested more deeply.
EA recommends backing up the Saves and Mods folders before updates. The Sims Team’s post-update checklist also recommends deleting localthumbcache.package when changing mods. Keep a separate copy of those folders somewhere safe before troubleshooting.

If the settings keep switching off
First check whether the game has just updated: mods may be disabled again after an update. If the settings revert on every launch even without a new update, security software is one possible cause mentioned in EA Forums community guidance, not a confirmed diagnosis for every computer (EA Forums). Review your security software’s settings rather than leaving protection disabled indefinitely.
If script mods are enabled but something still goes wrong
Test with the suspect mod removed or updated, changing one mod at a time where practical. Check the creator’s site for a compatible version and include your current game version if you ask for help. EA lists errors 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 as possible signs of a game script issue, and says error 110 commonly appears after an update and is caused by outdated mods. These codes are clues, not proof that a particular mod is responsible (EA Help).

Re-enable now or wait for an update?
If a mod’s creator has confirmed compatibility with your installed game version, follow the creator’s instructions and test cautiously. If compatibility is unknown—especially for a script mod that changes gameplay—waiting for confirmation is the safer choice. EA notes that creators may need time to update their mods; its guidance does not establish a universal waiting period.
