Purple-and-black blocks usually mean Minecraft could not find or load the texture for an asset. The pattern is a clue, not a diagnosis: a resource pack or add-on may be disabled, corrupted, conflicting with another pack, or made for a different game version. Start by checking whether the blocks render correctly with custom packs turned off, then test packs individually.
First, narrow down what is affected
Note whether you play Java or Bedrock, which game version is installed, and whether the problem affects every block or only blocks changed by a particular pack. If only pack-specific blocks look wrong, begin with that pack; if the problem appears across the game, test without all custom packs before investigating individual assets.
Test the game without custom packs
- Disable your resource packs or add-ons, then restart Minecraft and check the affected blocks again.
- If the blocks now look normal, re-enable packs one at a time, checking the same blocks after each change. This identifies whether a particular pack or combination is involved.
- For Bedrock, test a suspect add-on in a newly created world as well. Minecraft Help recommends disabling add-ons to identify conflicts and using a new world to test them. Minecraft Help: Troubleshoot Add-On Issues in Minecraft
If you play Bedrock
Make sure the intended resource pack is active. When multiple packs affect the same asset, pack order matters: the highest-ranked pack is applied. Reorder packs if the wrong version of a texture is taking priority. If a pack seems to be missing files or may be damaged, redownload it and test it again. Minecraft Help’s add-on troubleshooting guide covers disabling, reordering, activating, and redownloading packs.
If you play Java
Check that the resource pack is intended for your exact Minecraft version, and verify that its asset files and texture or atlas configuration match that version. Java release notes document changes to texture loading and asset paths over time: version 1.19.3 describes atlas configuration and loading behavior, while version 26.2 documents updated models, texture names, and paths. Version 26.3 notes further resource-pack version and palette-path changes. These examples show why an older pack may need updating; they do not prove that any particular pack is faulty.

Use the notes for the version you actually have installed rather than copying an asset path from a different release.
If the blocks are still purple and black
If the issue remains with custom packs disabled, use Minecraft’s official video and graphics support resources for your edition. The color pattern alone does not establish that your GPU or other hardware is failing. Minecraft Help: Video & Graphics Support
