It is simply not visible under the Battle.net account, WoW license, game version, or realm you are currently using. Work through those four mismatches before assuming anything has happened to the character. Only Blizzard Support can check account-specific character data, so if the checks below do not find the character, that is where the search has to continue.
What the available evidence does and does not establish
Recent answers in Blizzard Customer Support forum threads point to a small set of checks that resolve most “missing character” reports. One September 2026 reply tells players with more than one WoW license to check every license for Classic characters. A separate thread about a character that disappeared after a transfer recommends confirming that the launcher is set to the correct game version and license. These are troubleshooting suggestions from community support discussions. They are not an explanation of what happened to any particular character.
Nothing in these sources establishes a general rule that inactivity deletes Classic characters, and none of them explains an individual case. Public material cannot tell you which account, license, or realm holds your character. Avoid treating a missing character as proof of deletion until the checks below have been completed.
Check the account, license, version, and realm in order
Run these checks in sequence. Each one rules out a common reason a character disappears from view.

- Confirm the Battle.net account. Sign in to the Battle.net account the character was originally played on. If you own more than one Battle.net account, check each one. Characters are tied to the account that created them, so the wrong account will never show them.
- Confirm the game product and version in the launcher. Open the Battle.net launcher and check which WoW product is selected before you press Play. Classic and retail character lists are separate, and the selected product can be Classic, retail, beta, or PTR. A forum reply after a transfer warns that the launcher can switch the selected game or license without you noticing.
- Open the WoW license dropdown. If more than one WoW license appears at character selection, switch through each one. A character can sit under a license other than the one currently selected.
- Check every realm you might have used. Do not assume the realm shown by default is the only place characters can exist. Use the realm-selection screen and check the realms you played on, including any you transferred to or from. If you remember a transfer or migration, confirm both the destination realm and the game mode it belongs to.
- Use the Item Restoration page only as a lead. A recent community forum reply suggests the Item Restoration service’s character and license interface may help show which realm holds a character. Treat that as a possible lead to investigate, not a documented recovery feature. Blizzard’s own description of the service is covered in the next section.
- Contact Blizzard Support while signed in to the account. If none of the above locates the character, submit a support request from the account that owns it. Support can investigate account-specific data that no public guide can see.
Where a mismatch usually sits
The table below groups the likely causes by where the mismatch occurs, with the next check for each. The sources do not rank these causes by how often they occur, so work through them in the order above rather than guessing.

A mismatch in any of these points explains a list that looks empty. A character that is absent from every account, license, version, and realm you can reach needs a Blizzard Support investigation rather than further guessing.

What the Item Restoration service covers
Blizzard’s Item Restoration service is documented on its support page for eligible in-game items that a character vendored, destroyed, or disenchanted. Eligible items are returned to the character’s mailbox. The page describes item recovery only. It does not describe restoring a missing character, so do not use it as a character-recovery tool in your own troubleshooting or advice.
Transfer rules differ by Classic mode
If you remember moving a character, the transfer rules for your mode may explain why the character is not where you expected. Forum replies quoting Blizzard’s transfer restrictions state the following. These are time-sensitive details, so confirm them against Blizzard’s current transfer article before relying on them.

A transfer restriction explains why a character cannot be moved through that service. It does not show that the character was deleted. A character that was never transferred, or was transferred under a rule that still applies, will still be on its original account and realm.

If the account, license, version, and realm checks have all been completed, contact Blizzard Support from the account that owns the character. Have these details ready so the request can be matched to the right data:

- Each WoW license you saw in the dropdown, and which one you normally play on
- Every realm and game mode you played on, plus any transfer you remember, with approximate dates
- The character names, classes, and levels you expect to see
Avoid steps that the sources do not support for this problem. Do not delete or edit WoW interface or cache files in the hope of restoring a character list. Do not pay a third party for recovery, and do not attempt a transfer until you have confirmed that the transfer is allowed for your character’s mode.
