Why Are My Mods Not Showing Up in Forge?

Mods missing in Forge usually come down to the wrong launch profile, a mods folder the profile doesn't read, or a file built for another Minecraft version or loader. Here is how to check each one.

When a mod doesn’t appear in Forge, the cause is usually one of three things: you’re launching a different Minecraft profile than the one you installed the mod for, the JAR sits in a mods folder that the launched profile doesn’t read, or the file was built for a different Minecraft version or modloader. Check those three first. If they all pass, the game log and the mod’s declared dependencies will usually show the rejection.

Work through the checks in this order

Start with the things that cause the most mismatches, then move to the log only when the setup looks right. Each step rules out one category of problem, so skipping ahead tends to waste time.

  1. Confirm Forge is the session you’re launching. In your launcher, select the Forge installation or profile that matches the mod’s Minecraft version. A mod placed in a Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, or vanilla session will not load as a Forge mod, because these loader types are not interchangeable. CurseForge’s app supports Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla profiles as separate choices.
  2. Find the mods folder that profile actually reads. The standard location in a manual installation is the .minecraft/mods folder. A managed CurseForge profile can use its own instance directory instead, so a global .minecraft/mods folder may not be the one being loaded. Place the JAR in the folder belonging to the profile you launch.
  3. Match both the Minecraft version and the loader on the file. Open the mod’s file listing and read the Minecraft version and loader it lists. CurseForge notes that not every mod and game version works with every loader. Don’t assume that a file with the same mod name is the right build; many mods publish separate files for each version and loader.
  4. Check dependencies and declared requirements. Forge’s mods.toml metadata can declare a loader version range, a Minecraft version range, and required dependencies. Forge checks these declarations, and when a loading requirement is unmet, loading fails. Install only the dependencies the mod author lists for that specific version.
  5. Read the game log. If the mod is still absent or the game fails to start, open the most recent log in the active game directory’s logs folder and search for the mod’s filename, a rejected loader or version message, or a missing dependency.
  6. Repair the CurseForge installation if the setup is the problem. For modpack setup and launch errors, CurseForge recommends Repair Installation. If an unexpected launch error continues after repair, its guidance is to try the standard Minecraft launcher and then contact CurseForge support with your logs.

Compare the five things that decide what loads

When you’re comparing a mod file against a profile, these five values determine most outcomes. The first four catch the usual selection and placement mismatches. The fifth matters once Forge rejects a file or startup reports a missing requirement.

Check Where to verify it Typical mismatch
Minecraft version The mod’s file listing and the profile’s game version A file built for one release placed in a profile running another
Modloader type The file’s loader tag and the launcher profile type A Fabric or NeoForge build placed in a Forge profile, or a Forge file in a vanilla session
Forge build selected The installation chosen in the launcher before pressing Play Launching a different Forge installation than the one you installed the mod into
Instance folder being read The profile’s folder-opening control or its directory on disk Copying the JAR into a global .minecraft/mods folder while the managed profile reads its own directory
Dependencies and declared requirements mods.toml inside the JAR and the mod author’s dependency list for that version A required library is missing, or the mod declares a version range your install doesn’t meet

Why the folder location matters

CurseForge creates a dedicated modding environment for each managed profile. That means the mods folder you see in a general Minecraft directory is not always the folder a CurseForge profile reads. Use the profile’s folder-opening control, or find the profile’s directory on disk, and place the JAR there.

CurseForge also warns that its configured modding folder can cause problems if it sits in a OneDrive-synced directory, the vanilla Minecraft directory, the Desktop, the root of a drive, or a path containing special or non-English characters. These restrictions apply to the modding folder configured in the CurseForge app. They do not mean that every manually managed Minecraft folder has the same limits, so a folder that works for a manual install is not necessarily a problem here.

What the official support position means for you

Minecraft Help states: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” For a mod that won’t load, this means Mojang’s support will not diagnose it. Your practical sources of help are the mod author’s documentation, the CurseForge support channels for launcher issues, and the log messages themselves.

Symptoms that point to the right fix

  • The mod is missing from the mods list entirely. Check the profile selection and the folder the profile reads first. A file in the wrong folder never reaches the loader.
  • The log names the mod file but reports a version or loader mismatch. Replace the file with the build listed for your Minecraft version and loader.
  • The log reports a missing dependency. Install the library the mod author lists for that exact version, then restart.
  • The setup looks correct but a CurseForge launch error persists. Run Repair Installation, then try the standard Minecraft launcher, and send logs to support if the problem continues.

Players commonly describe this problem as “The mods just don’t show up,” or as mods missing from the in-game Mods list even after they were placed in a mods folder. Those reports describe the symptom, not a single cause, so run the checks above in order rather than assuming one fix.
