Bungie removed Destiny 2’s Forsaken campaign and the Tangled Shore from the active game on February 22, 2022, as part of its Destiny Content Vault (DCV). Bungie said vaulting selected older content would make room for new experiences and help the team update the game more quickly. Forsaken was not erased in its entirety: the Dreaming City remained, and the Forsaken Pack retained access to Last Wish, Shattered Throne and Forsaken Exotics.
What Bungie removed in February 2022
Bungie announced on October 7, 2021 that the Forsaken campaign and Tangled Shore destination would enter the DCV when Year 5 and The Witch Queen launched on February 22, 2022. The campaign had been free to all players from December 7, 2021 until it was vaulted. Bungie’s October 2021 announcement also made clear that the Dreaming City would remain available.
Bungie’s current DCV listing still names Forsaken among the vaulted campaigns and the Tangled Shore among the vaulted destinations. The page says vaulted content may return in the future; it does not announce that the Forsaken campaign has returned.
Why Bungie said it was vaulting content
Bungie described the DCV as a way to cycle some destinations and activities out of the game so Destiny 2 could keep evolving, make room for new experiences and receive updates more quickly. In its explanation of the specific Year 5 change, Bungie tied the space to planned additions including the Throne World destination, weapon crafting, a Legendary campaign option, the Glaive weapon archetype and seasonal content.

Bungie also cited technical benefits it associated with the DCV, such as more technical “breathing room,” quicker patch response, improved loading times and faster access to interface elements like inventory and map. Those are Bungie’s stated reasons and examples, not an independent technical measurement of Forsaken’s removal.
What remained available
Vaulting the campaign did not remove every Forsaken-linked activity or reward. The Dreaming City remained in the game. Bungie said the Forsaken Pack provided access to the Last Wish raid, Shattered Throne dungeon and Forsaken Exotics; it also said that players who already owned Forsaken would automatically own the pack. Bungie’s current paid-content guide still lists the Forsaken Pack. Whether it can be purchased, and on what terms, depends on the platform storefront, so check your own store for current availability.

Did Bungie later change its vaulting policy?
Yes. In August 2022, Bungie said expansions would no longer be vaulted. Its stated policy was that seasonal content would remain throughout the current expansion year and then move into the DCV when a new expansion launched. Bungie’s current DCV page repeats that expansions would no longer be vaulted. That policy change did not restore Forsaken: the campaign and Tangled Shore remain listed as vaulted.

Bungie has not published a Forsaken-specific playtime percentage or install-size figure in the cited explanations. A frequently repeated example from Bungie’s 2020 DCV article concerns Warmind, not Forsaken: Bungie said its campaign represented 0.3% of playtime in Season of the Worthy while the expansion accounted for 5% of total install size. Those figures should not be applied to Forsaken.

In that same 2020 explanation, Bungie summarized its reason for adopting the DCV as creating a sustainable ecosystem in which the world could continue to evolve and the game could be updated more quickly. Its later 2021 announcement applied that approach to Forsaken’s campaign and the Tangled Shore.
