Why Battlefield 6 Was a Huge Steam Launch—and What Players Think Now

Battlefield 6 launched to major commercial and player-count milestones, and one prominent PC review praised its large-scale multiplayer, gunplay and performance. But those launch headlines do not mean Steam players still rate it overwhelmingly positively: an October 2026 snapshot showed mixed user sentiment and far fewer concurrent players than the October 2025 peak.

Why did Battlefield 6 become so popular on Steam?

Battlefield 6 released on October 10, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC storefronts. Its launch combined a large multiplayer offering with a strong initial audience. EA reported that the game sold more than 7 million copies in its first three days, describing it as the franchise’s biggest opening. That is a publisher-reported launch figure, not an independently audited lifetime-sales total. EA also said the launch weekend included 172 million online matches and 15 million hours watched on streaming services.

On Steam, the concurrent-player peak reached 656,067 in October 2025, according to SteamCharts. That is a count of people playing simultaneously on Steam at the peak—not the number of copies sold, unique players over time or the game’s total audience across platforms. The sales and Steam figures point to a notably large launch, but they measure different things.

What did reviewers praise?

In an October 16, 2025 review, PC Gamer’s Morgan Park gave the game 82/100. Park’s assessment was that “Battlefield 6 is more about refinements than surprises, but a well-made Battlefield is automatically one of the best shooters of the year.” The praise focused on the strengths of the series’ large-scale multiplayer: 64-player Conquest, vehicles, responsive gunplay, sound design and PC performance.

Battlefield 6 Standard -- PC EA App [Online Game Code]
  • The ultimate all-out warfare experience.
  • MULTIPLAYER Victory, however you envision it. Battlefield 6 has more ways to win than ever before.
  • GLOBAL SCALE CAMPAIGN Join an elite squad of Marine Raiders fighting relentlessly to save a world on the edge of collapse.
  • PORTAL Battlefield Portal is a massive sandbox where creators and players can push Battlefield to the limit. Take unprecedented control of your environment by moving, scaling, and duplicating objects.
  • Pre-order Battlefield 6 Standard Edition and get the Tombstone Pack*, featuring: - Gravedigger Soldier Skin - “Fallen Heroes” Player Card - “Bandolier” Weapon Charm - “Express Delivery” Weapon Sticker - “Hatchet” L110 Weapon Package - “Doomsayer” Soldier Patch - Tombstone XP Boost Set

Park also described the core appeal as a success, writing, “That is the pitch of Battlefield 6, and it’s a bullseye.” That is one critic’s judgment, not evidence of a universal critical consensus. The same review identified drawbacks: the launch map pool, slow progression and challenge grind, Portal discoverability and server limitations, and a campaign that did not match the multiplayer’s strengths.

Are Battlefield 6’s Steam reviews still rave reviews?

No—not in the later Steam snapshot. Steam’s listing showed 66% positive among 155,138 English-language user reviews overall, while 46% of 4,991 reviews in the most recent 30 days were positive. These figures were captured in the weeks before October 8, 2026, and can change as reviews arrive. The overall percentage is mixed rather than overwhelmingly positive, and the recent-review figure was below half.

These user-review aggregates answer a different question from PC Gamer’s 82/100 score. One is a changing share of Steam users who leave a positive review; the other is a named reviewer’s evaluation published at launch. Neither should be presented as a timeless verdict on every platform or player’s experience.

How many people are playing Battlefield 6 on Steam now?

SteamCharts recorded 33,419 concurrent players at 18:00:45 UTC on October 8, 2026, with a 34,493 peak over the preceding 24 hours. Its September 2026 monthly row showed an average of 30,882.74 concurrent players. These are Steam-only tracker figures and a snapshot, not a count of all active players across PC and consoles. They are also well below the October 2025 Steam peak of 656,067, so the launch peak should not be mistaken for the game’s current activity level.

Is Battlefield 6 still a hit?

That depends on what “hit” means. The launch was commercially and concurrently large by the measures available: EA reported more than 7 million copies sold in three days, and SteamCharts recorded a peak of 656,067 simultaneous Steam players. The available figures do not establish audited lifetime sales or total active players across all platforms. By October 2026, Steam activity was substantially below its launch peak, and recent Steam reviews were mixed. It is accurate to call Battlefield 6 a major launch; it is not accurate to describe current Steam sentiment as universally rave-worthy.
