If the problem happens only in a multiplayer world, ask its host or administrator to check your build access. If it started after adding custom content, troubleshoot the add-ons or mods.
Start by checking where block placement fails
Try placing a block in another world you control. This quick comparison helps narrow down the cause:
- It fails in every world: Check your game mode and whether your placement control works as expected.
- It fails in one multiplayer world: Ask the owner or server administrator whether you can build there and whether rules apply to the location.
- It began after a content change: Check recently enabled or updated add-ons in Bedrock, or mods in Java Edition.
These checks narrow the possibilities; they do not establish a universal rule for server protections. Those rules can vary, so verify them with the world’s owner or administrator.
Check your game mode
Minecraft’s game modes have different rules for changing the world. Minecraft Help explains that Adventure restricts placing and breaking blocks unless players use special items, while Spectator does not allow physical changes. - Adventure: Use the items intended by the map or experience. If you control the world and want unrestricted building, switch to a mode that allows it.
- Spectator: You cannot place blocks because this mode does not permit physical changes to the world. Switch modes if you have permission and want to build.
- Creative: Block placement is allowed. If placement still fails, check whether the issue is limited to a particular world or multiplayer location, then investigate custom content.
If you can’t build in a multiplayer world
Being able to join a multiplayer game and being allowed to build in it are separate issues. Minecraft’s multiplayer troubleshooting guidance addresses access and connectivity, but it does not establish the rules for building on a particular server or in a protected area. Ask the world owner or server administrator to check the rules that apply to your account and location. For connection or access problems, consult Minecraft Help’s multiplayer connectivity guide.
If the problem started after enabling a Bedrock add-on
Bedrock add-ons can conflict. Minecraft recommends restarting or updating the game, then isolating packs by disabling or reordering them and testing in a new world. Follow its add-on troubleshooting steps and instructions for activating Bedrock add-ons.

- Back up the world before changing its packs.
- Restart the game and check for updates.
- Disable or reorder packs to isolate the one causing the problem.
- Test in a new world to see whether the issue follows the add-on.
Backups matter because blocks from a disabled add-on can be replaced when that content is no longer available in the world.
If the problem started after installing a Java mod
Mods are third-party content. Minecraft warns that they may cause the game to malfunction or become unplayable, and Minecraft Support does not support problems caused by mods. With a copy or backup of your world, test an unmodified setup; if the issue goes away, consult the mod’s author. See Minecraft Help’s information about Java Edition mods.
