Marathon was not part of PlayStation’s September 3, 2026 State of Play. It is absent from the official recap of the double-sized presentation, and we found no official explanation from PlayStation or Bungie for its absence. Bungie’s live-game work that month is real context, but no source ties it to the omission, so any link between the two is speculation.
What the September 3 recap shows
PlayStation billed September 3 as a “double-sized State of Play” made up of two shows. Its official recap, written by Gillen McAllister, Manager, Content Communications, Sony Interactive Entertainment, describes the event as bringing together “creatives from the world over to debut new games, share deep gameplay dives and fresh insights, reveal release dates, and much more.” The recap is an alphabetical list of announcements, and Marathon does not appear in it.
That answers the appearance question and nothing more. The recap shows what PlayStation chose to list. It does not show how the lineup was built, whether Marathon was considered, or whether a full-length broadcast segment mentioned the game in passing. Treat “not in the recap” as the documented fact and avoid reading a motive into it.
Why no official reason can be confirmed
Neither PlayStation nor Bungie has said why Marathon was left out. Sony’s booking decisions for State of Play are not published, and Bungie’s public statements from the same weeks discuss its development schedule rather than the broadcast. Any explanation beyond “not included” would need a statement from one of the two companies that names the reason. None has been published as of October 8, 2026.

What Bungie was announcing that month
The September 14 development update
On September 14, the Marathon Dev Team said content originally planned for a September 22 major update would move to the Symbiosis update on December 8, 2026. The same update described an October 6 refresh intended to reset progression and the in-game economy, refresh rewards, and improve the live game. It also said: “We’re also moving away from a strict seasonal schedule,” a change Bungie described as giving developers more room to build, test, and improve features before release.
The later roadmap
Bungie’s subsequent roadmap framed Symbiosis as a step toward a broader evolution of the game. The listed items include a permanent PvE experience, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, onboarding improvements, changes to the Perimeter zone, and a new Runner shell. A separate set of planned changes was outlined for March. These are announced plans. They do not show that any particular feature was unfinished on September 3, and they do not show that the roadmap affected what PlayStation put in its broadcast.
Why the timing does not settle the question
Bungie was rescheduling a major update and running a live-game refresh during the same weeks as the State of Play. That overlap is a fair observation about timing. It is not evidence of cause. Bungie did not connect its update schedule to the broadcast, and PlayStation did not explain its lineup. A reader who wants a reason has to treat the schedule as background only.
Sony’s June statement and the layoffs
On June 25, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment said workforce reductions at Bungie affected some Marathon team members. The statement was an internal email from Hermen Hulst, CEO, Studio Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment, published by SIE Communications. In the same message Sony wrote: “Marathon remains an important part of our portfolio, and we will continue to support the team as they build on the strong foundation established in Season 1 and 2, and as they work on incubation efforts for future projects.”

The layoffs are real and relevant background. They do not establish that Sony dropped Marathon, and they do not establish that the game was excluded from State of Play for financial or staffing reasons. Sony’s own statement says the opposite about the game’s place in its portfolio.
Is Bungie still supporting Marathon?
The available evidence points to continued support, though not a release announcement. Bungie’s roadmap lists upcoming changes, and Sony’s June statement commits to continued support. On September 17, Bungie studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon head Josh Deane acknowledged lost trust with players and said the team needed to make clear choices, deliver, and communicate consistently. That statement does not mention State of Play. Bungie published its September roadmap updates separately from the broadcast, so readers should not treat them as State of Play announcements.

What the sources cannot tell you
- Whether Marathon was discussed off-camera or considered for either show.
- Whether any Marathon segment was cut after the recap was assembled.
- Whether Sony will feature Marathon at a later State of Play. No source addresses future event lineups.
Until PlayStation or Bungie names a reason, the accurate answer is that Marathon was absent from the September 3 recap and the reason is unknown.
