If that doesn’t fix it, check Fortnite’s voice channel, account permissions and PS5 microphone settings. The right fix depends on whether you can’t be heard, can’t hear others, or both.
Start with the two common PS5 voice-chat blockers
- Leave PlayStation Party Chat. Press the PS button, open the party voice-chat card and leave the party. Fortnite’s Party Channel and Game Channel are separate from PlayStation Party Chat; Epic says being in a PlayStation party prevents Fortnite voice chat from working, even if nobody else is in the party. Epic’s Fortnite voice-chat troubleshooting guide explains the restriction.
- Turn off the game-voice mute. Press the PS button, select Sound, turn off Mute Game Voice Chat, and restart Fortnite. Epic lists this as a PS5 troubleshooting step. Voice chat may also be interrupted while Fortnite loads; wait until the game has finished loading before treating a brief interruption as a fault.
Check the Fortnite voice channel
Fortnite has two voice channels. Party Channel connects people in an Epic Party; Game Channel connects players on the same team who are in different parties. Open Fortnite’s Social menu and select the channel that matches who you want to talk to. Being in the wrong channel can make it seem as if your mic or your friends’ chat is broken.
PlayStation also lets you switch between party chat and game chat from the voice-chat card in Control Center. If Fortnite shows the right channel but audio is still going elsewhere, check that console setting. See PlayStation’s PS5 voice-chat troubleshooting instructions.
If friends can’t hear you, check the PS5 microphone
- On the PS5 home screen, go to Settings > Sound > Microphone.
- Confirm that Input Device is the microphone you are actually using, then use Adjust Microphone Level to check that the input responds.
- If the DualSense controller is selected, check that its microphone is not muted with the controller’s mute button.
- If the input meter does not respond, try another headset or controller to isolate whether the selected device is the problem. PlayStation notes that the controller has a built-in microphone for voice chat and voice input; its troubleshooting guidance recommends testing another headset or controller when input fails.
Do not buy a headset as the first fix: a new device cannot resolve a party-chat routing issue, a muted game voice setting or an account restriction. Consider another PS5-compatible microphone only if the input test points to a hardware problem.

If you can’t hear other players, check audio output
Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the output device you want to use. Check what audio is set to play through your headphones. If you hear game audio but not chat, also verify the Fortnite channel and the PS5 party/game-chat routing; these settings determine where voice chat goes.
Make sure the account is allowed to use voice chat
In Fortnite’s parental controls, check that Voice Chat is not set to Nobody. Epic lists these choices: Everybody, Friends, team members, & connections, Friends Only and Nobody. Age limits apply: players under 10 are limited to Friends Only, and players under 13 are limited to Friends, team members, & connections. Check Epic’s Cabined Accounts and parental-consent information if the option is unavailable or restricted.

A cabined Epic account cannot use voice chat until a parent or guardian provides consent. If a parent or guardian manages the setting, they can review it in the Epic Account Portal. Console parental controls are separate, so check those as well if the Epic setting appears to allow chat.
Check service status before changing network settings
If routing, permissions and devices all look correct, check Epic’s Server Status and Communities pages for outages or known issues. If there is no reported issue, network configuration may be relevant; Epic identifies DNS and required network ports among possible troubleshooting areas. Start with status checks and symptoms before changing router or DNS settings, and follow Epic’s current instructions for any advanced changes.

What voice reporting means when you enable chat
Epic says that when voice reporting is on, the latest five minutes of audio are captured on each participant’s device and sent to Epic only if a participant submits a report. Voice reporting is always on in chats that include players under 18. Epic says an under-18 player who does not want audio captured can mute themselves or turn voice chat off.
